SUMMARY: We are currently seeking a Medical Technologist to join our Microbiology team. This full time role will work evenings, including every other weekend (weekend coverage falls mostly on evenings but potential for occasional days). Also includes rotating holidays. Purpose of this position: Under general supervision, performs clinical laboratory testing of moderate to highly complex testing. Uses automated equipment and specialized processes for testing, accurately interpreting the results and able to identify abnormal results of specimens submitted to the laboratory. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Follows all laboratory established procedures and processes, including but not limited to patient identification, specimen collection, diagnostic clinical testing, and documentation and data entry into the laboratory information system and /or patient result logs * Based on training and protocol recognize, document, and communicate unusual and/or critical result values * Must be competent in (5) work stations or work areas as defined by their section * Performs and monitors quality control processes, establish and monitor quality assurance and record keeping systems, participates in quality improvement programs, according the standard operating procedures to assure accuracy and validity of test results * Performs calibration, maintenance, and performance checks on instrumentation according to standard operating procedures and participates in the preparation and evaluation of maintenance schedules and operating procedures for new instrumentation, including writing technical procedures according to regulatory protocol * Performs troubleshooting processes for instrumentation, reagents, and inventory and/or patient samples as they occur and evaluates methods for solutions * Takes a leadership role by acting as charge tech when assigned, assisting in the training/teaching of new staff members and /or student interns QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Science * Completion of a CLS/MLS/MT training program approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), * OR- * An approved equivalent combination of education and experience For Medical Technologists in Molecular Diagnostics, Toxicology, or Microbiology: * Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Science * Completion of a CLS/MLS/MT training program approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), Bachelor's degree in biological science or chemistry * OR- * a Bachelor's degree with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's degree * OR- * Bachelor's degree, with the intention of meeting the above guidelines during the one-year of full-time employment to be eligible to sit for the exam Laboratory Experience: To fulfill the experience requirement for the Technologist in Molecular Biology examination, you must have laboratory experience within the timeframe required in one of the following areas: *

What you will do
Obtain and properly identify blood specimens by performing venipunctures and capillary punctures in all age groups (newborns, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics) and patient types.
Access, select, release and print test orders from the electronic medical record system. Resolves unusual or duplicative orders as needed. Transcribes outside orders into the electronic medical record system as required.
Process specimens according to established procedures. Prepare specimens for transport per International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations to other laboratories as needed.
Perform and result waived point of care tests. Maintain quality waived test results by following department procedures.
Instruct patients in proper procedures for specimen collection when necessary. Answer patient questions regarding collection techniques and offers additional resources if patient requests them.
Follow the Phlebotomist Service Standards: (1) Use patient-centric communication; (2) Demonstrate empathetic responses to patients' concerns; (3) Acknowledge wait times and service delays; (4) Protect patient privacy; (5) Demonstrate teamwork with all members of the healthcare team; (6) Follow the organization's and laboratory's professional behavior guidelines/policies.
Assist with teaching, training and mentoring phlebotomist interns and trainees.
Maintain and monitor supply stock in the laboratory.

Job Summary

Performs phlebotomy, venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures in compliance with Winona Health policies and regulatory requirements.
Knowledgeable of proper specimen collection requirements. Performs phlebotomy for patients of all ages in compliance with the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) standards and established laboratory policies and procedures.
Performs specimen check in processes and distribution of blood, urine and culture specimens received into the lab
Provides urine drug screen collection and processing services according to established policies and procedures. Assists with processing specimens for referral lab testing.
Performs general clerical duties including answering phones, faxing documents, order entry, result entry, database entry for send out tests, and multiple other clerical tasks as needed.
Provides off-site phlebotomy services to residents in area nursing homes and for community health screening clinics and other Winona Health approved services.
May be trained in the preparation and processing of Thin Prep PAP Smears.
Essential Skills and Experience:
High school/GED/equivalent.
Requires phlebotomy training and/or experience. Phlebotomy
course completion required.
Knowledgeable and skilled at proper specimen collection

Job Summary
Responsibilities include phlebotomy, collecting, preparing and processing specimens biological specimens. Assists in performing laboratory activities and other assigned tasks. Aids in preparing laboratory specimens and supplies. May be responsible for entering laboratory orders and results. Ensures the accuracy and quality of laboratory data in a safe and professional work environment.
Qualifications
High school diploma or General Educational Development Diploma (GED) preferred.
Completion of a formal phlebotomy program, phlebotomy experience, and experience in a laboratory-related field preferred. May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
