Summary Description
Under the supervision of a physician, assists as a first or second assistant on major or minor operations. The role encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and integration of services throughout the department of surgery. The Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) demonstrates and maintains a level of surgical competence and proficiency. Informs Nursing staff and Physician Assistants about surgical techniques and surgical care.
1. Reviews cases assigned; performs as first or second assistant to the attending surgeon on major or minor operations, including but not limited to positioning the patient for procedures, placement of tourniquets, supports, and devices, preparing surgical site, draping the patient maintaining a sterile field, inserting necessary tubes, drains, catheters, packing, and ortho devices.
2. Prepares, selects and assembles necessary surgical equipment and supplies as dictated by surgical procedure and the proposed surgical care plan.
3. Attends department meetings and participates in perioperative education programs as appropriate.
4. Maintains and/or enhances professional expertise through appropriate educational and organizational activities.
5. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
1. Graduation from a certified surgical assistant program approved by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP) or the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA). Bachelor's degree in science, Nursing or a directly related field, preferred.
2. Certification as a Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA).
3. Two to three years of experience in surgery.
4. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Skills Required
1. Manual dexterity and mechanical ability to assist surgeon in complex surgical techniques.
2. Physical stamina for prolonged standing, walking, and lifting.
3. Analytical ability necessary to monitor and deliver appropriate response to changes in patient condition, to monitor data lab reports, x-rays, physical findings, etc. and, in consultation with the attending physician, develop treatment plans.
Interpersonal skills necessary for eliciting medical and psychosocial history, instructing patients and families, and maintaining productive relationships with medical and Nursing staff.

A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the Practice Manager for Bronson Sleep Lab or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. A Polysomnographic Technologist can perform the duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision of other staff. Performs other related duties as assigned. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Associate's degree in Polysomnography; or successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency at all competencies required of a Polysomnographic Technician, and Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or equivalent required (must be in good standing and valid in the state of Michigan).

* Document routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
* Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc).
* Follow "lights on" procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.)
* Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

The Surgical Technologist works cooperatively with the RN Circulator, the surgeon, his or her assistants, and other medical personnel to provide efficient, safe, and comfortable care for the patient. The Surgical Technologist is directly responsible to a RN Operating Room Circulator and the OR Charge Manager. The Surgical Technologist utilizes specialized knowledge to assess, plan, gather equipment, prepare, and maintain the surgical field, re-evaluating and anticipating the needs of the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient and the operative team as the operation progresses.
