The Medical Lab Scientist has the ability to perform all the tests in the clinical laboratory, familiar with existing techniques and computerized instrumentation. Works with minimum supervision and can use independent judgment. Should have fundamental knowledge of all departments and the ability to rotate is required. Must be knowledgeable of quality control theory and have the ability to use quality control programs accurately. Must be able to systematically troubleshoot a procedure or an instrument. Will operate computerized instrumentation along with a sophisticated robotic automation line.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Accurately performs laboratory procedures from the procurement of the specimen to the reporting out of the results.
Responsible for high standards of accuracy and quality control at all times.
Responsible for care and routine maintenance of laboratory instrumentation.
Assist technicians and lab aides if problems occur.

A generalist Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/CLS/MLS) or Laboratory Technician (MLT/CLT) performs a wide range of medical laboratory tests used to diagnose, treat and prevent disease. Assumes responsibility for accuracy of testing, and uses technical knowledge and a theoretical understanding of instruments and test methodologies to validate procedures and ensure conformity to federal and/or state regulatory standards. Understands and applies the correct control measures and protocols in cases of abnormal results, escalating discrepancies as appropriate. Receives written and/or electronic laboratory orders and routinely performs phlebotomy for the collection of blood samples.
Determines suitability of specimen for analysis, following established procedures and policies.
Accurately performs clinical laboratory tests of varying complexity in accordance with laboratory procedures to examine specimens for the purpose of providing information to clinicians for the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of disease.
Proficiency in laboratory tests for specialties which may include chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and blood bank.
Records and reports test results. Reviews results for accuracy and precision and maintains testing turn-around-time standards for all categories of testing. When testing is delayed, communicates approximate turn-around-time to appropriate personnel.
Assures accurate results by utilizing controls and published standards to interpret and correlate laboratory data to patient established/suspected diagnoses and performing confirmatory tests as appropriate.
Communicates with providers, nursing staff, and clients, clearly responds to inquiries, and document interactions including specimen and test requirements and outcome of results. Communicates critical results to the person(s) responsible for the care of the patient. Escalating issues as appropriate.
Adheres to all safety/health and state/federal regulatory requirements.
Performs maintenance and function checks when required, calibrates as necessary, and runs quality control samples when scheduled or as needed on analytical equipment and evaluates results to ensure proper test performance and assure accurate and reliable test results and reporting.
Strives to resolve problems related to clinical issues, equipment or testing by initiating research utilizing available reference material. Performs basic and advanced troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance, documents action and notifies appropriate personnel, for example, supervisors, of problems all of the time.
Ensures that sufficient reagents and supplies necessary for test performance are available. Notifies supervisory staff when minimum inventory level is encountered.
Recognizes when changes in the workflow are needed by adjusting work to incorporate STAT tests or fluctuations in work volume
Required to identify and participate in process improvement projects.
Accepts and/or volunteers for method evaluations and new procedure development or other special projects and completes them within an agreed upon time frame.
Participates in laboratory procedure implementation and may serve as an educator and trainer for current and new staff throughout the organization.
Participate in quality improvement projects. Attend training and meetings as required
Maintains awareness of current quality and safety measures on the unit and follows guidelines or reporting measures to ensure safety of patients, visitors, and staff.

Qualifications
Education:
Associate's degree or higher in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Laboratory Science program and/or a Bachelor's degree or higher in another related science (chemistry, hematology, biology, immunology, etc.).
Experience:
Three months of documented, full-time experience in blood banking and microbiology (Required*)
*Due to limited testing performed in-house, we are unable to provide the required experience in these areas which are necessary for individuals to apply for certification exams following a 6-month internship.
Three months of documented, full-time experience in chemistry and hematology (Preferred)
At least one year of previous clinical laboratory experience (Preferred)
License/Certifications:
Must be registered in accordance with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, AMT or equivalent) within 12 months of hire.

Duties and Responsibilities

information systems.
2. Applies knowledge, training and clinical experience to operate instruments and assess
performance according to defined protocols and quality control checks. Prior to release
of analytic data, recognizes and refers implausible results, equipment malfunctions, or
special/unusual circumstances to laboratory technologist, leader, or supervisor.
3. Within established parameters, standardizes, calibrates, performs preventive
maintenance, quality control, and limited troubleshooting on laboratory equipment,
instruments, or information systems. Following successful completion of competency
testing, may perform processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision.
4. Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures,
including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental, and
infection control. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
5. Participates in various quality assessment and improvement and regulatory agency
activities in the department, including proficiency testing, gathering data for quality
assurance monitors, developing and adhering to safe work practices, participating in
quality improvement committees, and successfully completes regular competency
assessments.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. Completion of an Associate Degree Program in Medical Laboratory Technology, or
Laboratory Science Required. Alternatively, meeting the educational requirements of #3
below.
2. MLT certification from a recognized national certifying agency (ASCP or NCA) desired or
completion of a military 50-60 week technician program and meets the minimum CLIA
requirements. Alternatively, meeting the requirements of #3 below.
3. Successful completion an Associates or Bachelor's degree that includes at least (5)
college courses from among the following: Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry (inorganic or
organic), Physics, Nursing, Statistics, Physiology, Veterinary sciences, Mathematics,
Introduction to Laboratory Sciences, Pathology, Microscopic Anatomy (Histology),
Biochemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology (Blood Banking), Microbiology,
Urinalysis, or Coagulation. Course work outside of the US must be verified by NACES
approved credentialing evaluation service.
