I. General Summary: Anesthesiologists' responsibilities to patients include:

IV. Postanesthetic Care Responsibilities
A. Give to the health care receiver transfer of care information pertinent to the patient's specific needs and ensure a safe transition.
B. Remain with the patient as long as medically necessary and until the receiving health care provider has all the information needed to assume care.
C. Assure the patient is discharged from the postanesthesia care unit in accordance with policies established by the Department of Anesthesiology.
D. The duration of surveillance in the postanesthesia care unit is determined by the status of the patient and the judgment of the anesthesiologist.
V. Anesthesia Care Team (ACT)
A. Anesthesiologists supervising resident physicians in training and/or directing qualified non-physician anesthesia providers in the provision of anesthesia care wherein the physician may delegate monitoring and appropriate tasks while retaining overall responsibility for the patient.
B. Preanesthetic evaluation of the patient - Non-physicians may contribute to the preoperative collection and documentation of patient data, but the anesthesiologist is responsible for the overall evaluation of each patient.
C. Prescribing the anesthetic plan - The anesthesiologist is responsible for prescribing an anesthesia plan aimed at the greatest safety and highest quality for each patient. The anesthesiologist discusses with the patient (when appropriate), the anesthetic risks, benefits and alternatives and obtains informed consent. When a portion of the anesthetic care will be performed by another qualified anesthesia provider, the anesthesiologist should inform the patient that delegation of anesthetic duties is included in care provided by the Anesthesia Care Team (ACT). After discussion and determination of the anesthetic plan, both anesthesia providers should sign the Pre-Anesthesia Evaluation form.
D. Management of the anesthetic - The anesthesiologist may delegate specific tasks to qualified non-anesthesiologist members of the ACT providing that quality of care and patient safety are not compromised, but should participate in critical parts of the anesthetic and remain immediately physically available for management of emergencies regardless of the type of anesthetic.
E. Postanesthesia care- Patients transported to the PACU shall be accompanied by a member of the anesthesia care team who is knowledgeable about the patient's condition. The patient shall be continually evaluated and treated during transport with monitoring and support appropriate to the patient's condition. Upon arrival in the PACU, the patient shall e re-evaluated and a verbal report provided to the responsible PACU nurse by the member of the anesthesia care team who accompanies the patient. The evaluation and treatment of postanesthetic complications are the responsibility of the anesthesiologist. The anesthesiologist is responsible for the discharge of the patients from the PACU, either by the criteria or signature.
F Anesthesia consultation - Like other forms of medical consultation, this is the practice of medicine and should not be delegated to nonphysicians.
VI. Quality Assurance
The anesthesiologist will participate in a planned program for evaluation of quality and appropriateness of the anesthetic care of patients and will participate in resolving identified problems.
VII. Other responsibilities included, but are not limited to:
1. Supervision, teaching and evaluation of performance of personnel, both medical and paramedical, involved in perioperative care.
2. Provides support during emergency procedures (e.g. cardiac arrest).
3. Participates in the education of anesthesia residents including but not limited to: clinical supervision during administration of anesthesia and conducting education sessions.

Looking for this Nurse Navigator to bring specialty-specific clinical knowledge to offer individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers across the continuum of care. This position would collaborate with other health care team members including physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, social workers, financial counselors, community health workers, patient access coordinators, and ancillary and other support staff, and referring physicians to create a high-quality, efficient, safe, and exceptional patient experience.
Candidate Preferences: Cardiac Background. Care Coordination experience. Patient Education. Tracking patients for pre/post procedure, procedures which at times are at different locations and procedure scheduling.
GENERAL SUMMARY: Nurse Navigators are nurses with specialty-specific clinical knowledge who offer individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers across the continuum of care. Navigators Collaborate with other health care team members including physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, social workers, financial counselors, community health workers, patient access coordinators, and ancillary and other support staff, and referring physicians to create a high-quality, efficient, safe, and exceptional patient experience.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required.
Bachelor's Degree preferred. If ADN, must be willing to enroll in an accredited BSN program within 3 years of start date, obtain your BSN within 5 years of start date.
Two (2) years of nursing experience required. Specialty experience preferred.
Maintains and demonstrates current clinical knowledge in area of specialty.
Strong organizational, leadership, listening, critical thinking, problem solving, and interpersonal skills.
Strong communication skills, written and verbal. Ability to prioritize and reprioritize quickly. Ability to develop collaborative relationships both internally and externally. Ability to work in teams and in a self-directed, autonomous manner. Able to delegate and coordinate efforts of the team/co-workers. Compassionate and empathetic.
Understands Musculoskeletal Health specialties, pathways and procedures, goals of care, symptom management, quality of life, and evidence-based practice guidelines.
Demonstrates excellent coaching and mentoring skills.
Takes necessary actions to develop and maintain personal job competencies/expertise and to improve performance on an ongoing basis; keeps current regarding medical and technological trends in healthcare overall and/or specialty/service line best practices, as well as a working knowledge of insurance rules and community resources.
Computer skills and knowledge of Windows, Outlook and electronic medical record.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
Current licensure by the Michigan State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.
Specialty-specific certification preferred and desired within two (2) years of hire as appropriate to job being filled. NOTE: The Nurse Navigators for the Musculoskeletal Health Service Line already employed by HFHS orthopedic services have two (2) years to complete certification after entry into this job.
