The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine CEO and leadership

Joseph Caravalho Jr., M.D., (born c. 1957) is a physician and retired Major General of the Medical Corps of the United States Army. He is currently the president and CEO of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine. He has held specialized staff medical positions, served in operations at hospitals, and commanded major medical installations across the United States as well as operations in actions overseas. In December 2015, he was appointed as the Joint Staff surgeon, the chief medical advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I am a seasoned professional with more than 12 years experience in the field of scientific/regulatory consulting, clinical regulatory affairs, and two years of laboratory research leading to a M.S. in Pharmacology and Toxicology.

My regulatory/scientific consulting experience is centered around non-clinical pharmacology and toxicology, and clinical regulatory affairs and includes:

-Clinical regulatory portfolio management including study startup activities, continuing reviews, closeouts, and maintenance.

-Regulatory submissions (IND through Phase IV), IND maintenance, correspondence with FDA, IRBs, etc.

-Medical writing including clinical and non-clinical writing of INDs NDAs for drugs and biologics and clinical protocol writing.

-Regulatory strategy consulting.

-Writing toxicology study waivers (carci and repro), and adverse event reports.

-Pharmacological and/or toxicological review of new diseases, genotoxic impurities, excipients, potential airborne/oral toxins, etc.

- Performing and interpreting in silico analyses to evaluate impurities and excipients in drug substances and drug products.

-Managing a core team of diverse professionals specializing in projects dealing with FDA submissions, scientific reviews, daily news monitoring, data management and study monitoring.

-Professional development from an extended overseas assignment in Europe as well as numerous continuing education courses.

-Identifying and communicate potential risks and mitigation strategies in client meetings, telephone conferences and written work products.

-Managing databases containing privileged information for use in various assignments, including: client intellectual property, trade secrets, drug development plans, biographical information on scientific experts, compilation of adverse events, and general scientific data.

-Experience representing project teams to clients via email, face-to-face meetings, and via teleconferencing/video conferencing.

Corey Hastings is the SVP, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF). He leads the functions of Accounting, Billing, Disbursements, Financial Planning & Analysis, Procurement, and Treasury & Risk Management, with approximately 100 total staff members. HJF's activities include more than $480 million in federal grants and contracts and the organization employs over 2,800 people globally.

Since commencing his role with HJF, Corey has shortened the time to monthly financial close and audit completion, introduced robotic process automation (RPA) to improve processing speeds, introduced an automated monthly rolling forecast, reduced finance function spending while increasing productivity, and significantly shortened the cash conversion cycle. He also launched HJF's first investment program for operating funds and played a leading role in the acquisition of CAMRIS International, LLC, a mission-aligned subsidiary with over $40 million in annual revenue.

Previously, as VP of Workforce Programs at AARP Foundation, he led a staff of 120 people in implementing Department of Labor SCSEP grants totaling over $70 million, as well as other national programs. AARP Foundation SCSEP served more than 13,000 people annually and administered biweekly payroll for 6,000. During Corey's tenure, the program launched six new grant relationships and became the nation's largest SCSEP provider while exceeding national averages on all 6 core performance measures under its primary grant. From 2011 - 2015, Corey was AARP Foundation’s Director of Finance responsible for a $200 million budget, Board reporting, and contract development. Corey worked previously at the Uniformed Services University (Department of Defense) Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine as Executive Manager, where he helped to launch a $68 million federal research program focused on traumatic brain injury in military populations.
