Herbalife Nutrition company history timeline

1980

The Company was established in 1980 and has been on a mission to improve nutritional habits around the world ever since.

1981

Yet, as early as January 1981, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began receiving complaints of nausea, diarrhea, headaches, and constipation, which were attributed to the use of Herbalife products.

1982

1982: Herbalife launches its international operations in Canada, with dozens of other countries soon to follow.

By 1982 Herbalife had reached US$2 million in sales and had expanded into Canada.

In response, Herbalife removed the mandrake and poke root and promised to modify the product claims found in the 1982 Career Book.

1984

1984: Herbalife enters the European Market, starting in the United Kingdom.

1985

After a still-strong first quarter, the company ended 1985 with only $250 million in retail sales.

1985: Herbalife is labeled one of the fastest-growing companies in the United States by Inc. magazine amidst negative publicity.

1986

In order to fund this, Herbalife became open to everyone in December 1986, merging with a Utah based shell company.

1986: Herbalife shares begin trading on the NASDAQ. Jim Rohn begins to work with the company, inspired by his philosophy and ideas of millions of Independent Partners.

1988

1988: The company expands rapidly throughout the world, holding events in America, Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada.

1988: The company continues aggressive international expansion into Japan, Spain, New Zealand, Israel, and Mexico.

1991

1991: With the help of international business, sales reach $191 million.

1992

1992: The company launches distribution and promotion of new innovative food products and monthly sales jump from $ 3.1 million to $ 21 million per month

An Herbalife program introduced in 1992 called Wealth Building--in which newly recruited distributors could achieve supervisor status, with an immediate discount of 50 percent, if they made a first purchase of $500--was seen as skirting the edge of an illegal endless-chain scheme.

1993

Buoyed by this growth, Herbalife filed for a secondary offering of five million shares in 1993.

1994

1994: Mark Hughes introduces the Herbalife Family Foundation, a charity program dedicated to providing healthy and healthy nutrition to children in need around the world.

In 1994, the company began developing a new line entitled Personal Care, which focused on health awareness.

1995

In 1995, the firm suspended the sale of Thermojetics Instant Herbal Beverage in Germany after receiving complaints from government agencies about the product.

The products were launched in 1995 and included The Skin Survival Kit, Parfum Vitessence fragrances, and Nature's Mirror, a line of facial products.

1996

By 1996, Herbalife was operating in 32 countries and international sales accounted for more than 70 percent of total sales--sales in the United States, however, declined by 16.2 percent to $279.6 million.

1998

By 1998, the firm had expanded into Turkey, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, and Indonesia.

The firm settled the suit with shareholders and stock price faltered, trading around $10 per share after the announcement--in spring 1998 the stock had traded at $27 per share.

1999

1999: Hughes attempts to take the firm private.

2000

2000: Herbalife is celebrating its 20th anniversary with more than one million Independent Partners worldwide, promoting more than 100 Home and Outdoor Products in 50 countries.

2001

In 2001, Herbalife expanded into Morocco.

2002

The company continued to grow after his death and in 2002 was acquired by J.H. Whitney & Company and Golden Gate Capital for US$685 million, who took the company private again.

2003

By the year 2003, the company operated in 56 countries in Asia, Europe and the Americas and had a net worth of 1.8 billion.

2004

2004: Herbalife shares begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: HLF)

2004 net sales were reported as $1.3 billion.

2005

In August 2005, Doctor Steve Henig joined the company as Chief Scientific Officer, responsible for product research and development.

2005: Herbalife is celebrating its 25th anniversary as you reactivate the Chinese market with a different business model.

2008

2008: Two new clinical trials published by UCLA University of California, USA and from the University of Ulm in Germany, which demonstrate the effectiveness of Formula 1 Protein Drinks.

2010

2010: Herbalife celebrates 30 years of inspiring change in people’s lives by establishing the Herbalife Nutrition Institute (www.HerbalifeNutritionInstitute.com), which operates as a nutrition and health education provider.

2011

2011: Herbalife records net sales of $ 5.5 billion, surpassing its founder Mark Hughes’ vision of a $ 5 billion company.

2012

2012: Herbalife launches proprietary crops and extraction plants in Changsha, China, ensuring the excellent quality of herbal ingredients.

2013

On April 9, 2013, the company’s long-time auditor, KPMG, resigned after the KPMG executive who oversaw Herbalife audits admitted to providing insider information to a golfing friend about at least five companies — including Herbalife and Skechers.

2014

On May 7, 2014, the company announced that it entered into a deal with Bank of America Merrill Lynch to repurchase $266 million of its stock.”

2014: The Herbalife Family Foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary, supporting over 120 organizations in more than 50 countries, helping over 100,000 children annually

2018
