In 1899, five members from that congregation pledged to organize an assembly in Annapolis and raise $1200 to purchase a lot on the northwest corner of College Avenue and St John Street, across from the State House.
The story of College Avenue Baptist and Heritage Baptist, from 1903 to today, is a story of faith that takes us on a journey through the end of the second millennium and into the beginning of the third.
Mids were not allowed to attend Sunday School outside the Naval Academy until 1916.
College Avenue Baptist started a midshipmen Bible class that year, and attendance grew to 225 in its heyday in 1925, becoming the largest midshipmen’s class in the city.
In 1972, six families with a growing love for Reformed Theology began meeting together for Bible study, prayer and fellowship.
It flourished at that site until 1972, when the State of Maryland purchased the property for construction of state offices, and the church moved to its current location on Forest Drive, taking the name Heritage Baptist Church.
In 1979, the church purchased four and a half acres of property in this developing area of the community.
By 1980, a small church building with an education wing was completed.
In 1985, the church began looking for a permanent location—one that would not require the church to set-up and tear-down each week.
Heritage was founded on September 17, 1986 with 64 charter members.
In 1987, the church called its first pastor, Rev.
In the summer of 1987, construction commenced on a 16,000 sq. foot facility comprised of a 300 seat sanctuary, commercial kitchen, offices, classrooms, and nursery.
With a 10-fold growth from 25-250 members, Heritage Baptist Church dedicated it’s new, permanent home to the glory of God on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1988.
By August 1988, the church entered an interim period without a pastor.
However, God led the committee to approach Doctor Maxwell and after much prayer and leadership from the Lord, the church voted for him in June and he came as pastor on Sunday, July 30, 1990.
In early 1990, Doctor Bill Stewart of the Moody Bible Institute was supplying the pulpit on an interim basis.
The church relocated to its present property at 1357 S. Memorial Drive in 1992 after land was purchased and a new facility constructed.
In February of 1994, a 9200 sq. foot facility was built to the northwest of the existing brick building.
In October of 1995, Rocky Hails was called to join the growing pastoral staff of the church.
Heritage Baptist Church began in 1995 when a group of Christians from south Snohomish County were driving nearly an hour to attend church with people of like mind and spirit.
In the fall of 1996, construction began on a 12,800 sq ft. auditorium.
The first official worship service at Heritage Baptist Church was held on Easter Sunday, 1996.
The group continued to meet and pray and through a series of answered prayers, they were able to call a pastor to the church in early 1996.
During this period in 2000, Jim Jackson was called to join the pastoral staff to assist in family ministries and pastoral care.
In May 2001, the 10,000 sq. foot education facility was completed, including a small semi-circle auditorium, 6-17 flexible classrooms, office space, and a kitchen.
In October 2003, God continued to do His work in at Heritage as Pastor Maxwell stepped down and the church entered another interim period.
In 2003, Heritage began an annual Operation Inasmuch, which involves dozens of church members in local community service projects.
In the latter half of 2004, a local pastor submitted the name Marty Brown—a pastor of a Southern Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas—to the pulpit committee.
Heritage Baptist Church was founded in 2008.
Unable to find a building in Bolivar, they rented unit A in a strip mall just off Highway 13 south of Bolivar, MO. Through the generosity of the members they were able to furnish the church, and on August 15, 2010 the first church service was held.
The decision was made to double their space and rent Unit B. After much work by church members they were able to start Sunday School classes in November 2010.
Pastor Wayne has served as the Senior Pastor at Heritage since it began in 2010.
Wayne Mayse offered his resignation as pastor and in April 2011 Bro.
In September 2011, discussions were started about purchasing a permanent home for Heritage Baptist.
On Sunday, April 1, 2012, Heritage Baptist Church had their first church service in the new building.
A larger scale building project (the completion of a gym for the school and new worship center for the church) was completed in 2012.
Gary Urich retired (again) in 2015, and the search for a new pastor began.
On July 26th, 2019, Pastor Brent left us for his eternal home in glory with the Lord.
