Heritage Christian School company history timeline

1965

Harris and his family relocated to Indianapolis in 1965 and launched a mail campaign to area pastors, inviting them to informational meetings over coffee, in supporters’ homes.

1967

LAB’s first commencement exercise was held on June 9, 1967.

Heritage Christian School began with a few dedicated families who met together in 1967 to explore the formation of a Christian school in Canton.

1971

In 1971, the Tacoma Bible Presbyterian Church founded Heritage Christian School to help educate its own children and the children of other families.

1973

With another 5-acre donation from the Best Foundation, additional classrooms were added in 1973.The school’s footprint expanded over the following decades to accommodate the needs of a growing student body and to offer a full range of academic and extracurricular programs.

1974

In 1974, the Cleveland Baptist Church founded Heritage Christian School.

1975

Founding pastor, Roy Thompson, understood that it was time to take a stand for Christian education, so he organized a rally at the Statehouse in Columbus in 1975.

1975 - The school becomes Heritage Christian Schools and incorporates as an independent, non-denominational K-8 school.

1979

Fundraising began April 2, 1979 for a payment due May 15, 1979.

1979 - HCS graduates first student from high school.

1980

In 1980, just 12 years after the fledgling school had begun, Heritage graduated its first seven students.

1985

Heritage Christian School opened for instruction in 1985.

Since 1985, Heritage has grown in many ways.

1992

Built in 1992, the school building hosts classrooms that are both spacious and comfortable, specifically designed for their purpose.

1995

Heritage Christian Academy was formed by a common vision of a community of believers who met together for the first time on February 19, 1995.

Registration began on March 2, 1995 for the school year to begin in August of 1995.

Heritage Christian Academy opened an elementary campus (preschool through grade six) at the Church of Christ location and a secondary campus (grades seven through nine) at the Lake Pointe Campus in August of 1995 with an enrollment of 190 students.

1997

1997 - A generous donation allows HCS to purchase the Linfield building.

2000

In 2000, HCA realized their goal to have the secondary and elementary on one campus when they moved to and began leasing the First United Methodist Church.

2001

In December of 2001, the school purchased the church and saw the fulfillment of their vision to secure a permanent home.

2003

2003 - HCS Preschool is opened.

2006

In 2006, Heritage welcomed our first Ohio EdChoice Scholarship students.

In 2006, HCA received a grant from the Hillcrest Foundation, which was dedicated to updating the school library.

2006 - Opening of North Building on 108th Street campus.

2008

In 2008, the secondary grades began “Christians in Action,” or CIA. The entire 6th through 12th grade student body was divided into mixed-grade teams led by teachers.

2010

In 2010, the HOPE (Helping Others Pursue Excellence) Fund was inspired by English and was established to honor the memory of those who have either supported our students or who received services through the academic support of a tutor or Heritage Educational Support Services teacher.

2011

2011 - HCS Preschool through high School relocates at the Lower Elementary (WeatherStone), Upper Elementary (St Luke's) and Middle/High School (Pleasant Hill) campuses.

2012

HCS fosters a nurturing environment in which students’ spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, and artistic abilities can grow and expand. It was created in July 2012 by the acquisition of Los Angeles Baptist Middle School/High School, by Hillcrest Christian School.

The first students enrolled in November 2012.

In 2012, a preschool was opened on the former Granada Hills Baptist School site and is referred to as the West Campus.

2013

In 2013, Heritage opened Northeast Ohio’s first Ben Carson Reading Room.

2013 - HCS celebrates 40 years of educational ministry.

2014

2014 - HCS purchased former Glen Park School in New Berlin.
