Darrick Nelson

Chief Medical Officer & Family Medicine Residency Program Director

Dr. Nelson is the Chief Medical Officer at HMS and the founding Program Director of the HMS Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Darrick Nelson obtained his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Prior to joining HMS, Dr. Nelson was a professor and a core faculty member at Texas A&M University Health Science Center, Department of Family and Community Medicine, Corpus Christi Family Medicine Residency Program where he was responsible for the teaching and supervision of residents in outpatient clinics, inpatient hospital, intensive care unit, newborn nursery, labor and delivery, including C-sections, high risk obstetrics, and indigent care.

Dr. Nelson directs the delivery of patient-centered primary care services for HMS as well as leadership and innovation on projects and programs to improve clinical and overall health outcomes for the residents of Southwest New Mexico. Dr. Nelson is one of the founders of the FORWARD NM - Pathways to Health Careers workforce program at HMS. This 5-stage program reaches students from secondary education throughout graduate degrees and includes the accreditation of the HMS Family Medicine Residency Program, the first Teaching Health Center designation in New Mexico.

Garrett Olin

Chief Quality Officer

Garrett Olin serves as the Chief Quality Officer at HMS. Garrett graduated from Western Governors University of Texas with a Master of Business Administration degree focused on Management and Strategy, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. Prior to joining HMS, Garrett Olin worked at Gila Regional Medical Center leading or guiding quality improvement projects throughout the hospital. His career encompasses a diverse set of industries in providing the delivery of quality, technology and training services around the globe.

Garrett seeks to deliver on the mission and vision of HMS, to positively impact the quality of life of those we serve and to have HMS become a national model of frontier healthcare. The path to doing this includes keeping HMS a patient-centered organization, maintaining our accreditation, and continuing forward to the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. A native of upstate New York, Garrett has had ties to New Mexico for nearly 40 years.

Gretchen Cannon

Chief Financial Officer

Gretchen Cannon is the Chief Financial Officer at Hidalgo Medical Services. She was raised in a small town in Arkansas. She graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in 1999 in Mathematics and a Master’s Degree from the University of Arkansas in 2007.

Prior to HMS she has over 18 years’ experience as a Chief Financial Officer in non-profit and government sectors. In addition, she brings over 10 years of knowledge and experience working with FQHCs. Gretchen is a financial and management team member with proven work performance in communication, leadership and operations. She is a wife, mother and sports enthusiast who loves to spend time on the lake or enjoying any sports game, especially football.

Maribel Armendariz

Chief Support Officer

Maribel Armendariz is the Chief Support Officer at Hidalgo Medical Services. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas and later completed a Master of Business Administration Degree (MBA). Before coming to HMS, Maribel was an Assistant Vice President of Lending in banking and started with HMS as the Payor Contract Manager. She was then promoted to Payor Contract and Credentialing Manager before accepting her new role as Chief Support Officer in 2019. Maribel now oversees Family Support Services, Senior Services, and the Credentialing Department.

Maribel was raised in a small rural town in Kansas. She learned the value of a close knit community by watching her neighbors check in on each other and offer a helping hand when in need. That sense of community is demonstrated within the people of Grant and Hidalgo County and she is proud to belong to an organization that is a part of that unity.

Teresa Arizaga

Chief Mental Health Officer

Dr. Teresa Arizaga is the Chief Mental Health Officer at Hidalgo Medical Services. A native New Mexican, Dr. Teresa Arizaga learned the importance of serving her community and medical profession at a young age. As practitioners in the medical field, her parents were instrumental in instilling a good work ethic, compassionate care and a people centered approach in her practice. Dr. Arizaga is a product of the Silver Schools (Class of 1991) and obtained her B.A. in Psychology and Chemistry from New Mexico State University. Choosing to remain in New Mexico to be near her family, she earned her M.D. in 2000, completing her residency in psychiatry in 2004 from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She practiced at Gila Regional Medical Center beginning in 2005 and remained there for 15 years. She also ran a part time private practice for several years in Silver City, NM.

It is her hope to continue developing best practices with existing programs and to collaborate with GRMC, county detention centers, local providers, and with others. It is her vision to enhance behavioral health systems for children as well as proactive measures that can come with outpatient support, including drug and alcohol treatment. She believes that together, the potential for continued high quality behavioral health systems can be attained.
