High Steel Structures company history timeline

1933

1933 - High Welding completes its first experimental bridge welding project, welding angle iron stiffeners for a bridge near Stewartstown in York County, PA.

1947

1947 Steel, LLC founded

1950

By the late 1950’s the use of welded girders evolved and the company was ready to respond to the demand, using newly acquired automated equipment.

1951

1951 - Sanford High's son, Calvin G. High, joins the company

1953

1953 - The company is awarded its first sizable steel fabrication contracts

1955

1955 - High Welding Company continues to grow and moves to a new facility

1958

1958- Company purchases automated welding equipment.

1960

Through the interstate building boom of the 1960’s, the company continued to grow, supplying steel to a great number of bridges in Pennsylvania and the surrounding market area.

1963

1963 – S. Dale High, the youngest son of Sanford High joins full time after graduating from Elizabethtown College

1963 – Marking the beginning of expansion into other businesses, High Realty Company is formed

1977

1977 - High acquires Kurtz Precast Corporation, the forerunner of High Concrete Group.

1977 – High Industries Inc. is formed as a holding company for the growing number of High businesses.

1977 – Richard L. High, Calvin High’s son, joins High Steel Structures as master scheduler/project manager

1978

1978 – High Steel Service Center opens, a full-line metal processor and distributor; High acquires Lantz Builders, Inc., the forerunner of High Construction Company

1980

1980 – The High Foundation, a philanthropic, non-profit organization, is formed.

1983

1983 - Sanford H. High, the company’s founder, passes away.

1983 - High Steel receives first OSHA Star designation, recognizing excellence in its occupational health and safety program.

1985

1985 – Williamsport Fabricators is acquired by High Steel Structures, increasing market share and service to customers

1988

1988 – High Hotels Ltd. is formed to develop and manage limited-service hotels.

1989

1989 – Steven D. High, S. Dale High’s son, joins as a safety specialist

1990

1990 – High forms Greenfield Architects to provide architecture, adaptive reuse, interior design, and planning.

1991

1991 – Gregory A. High, S. Dale High’s son, joins High Associates as marketing representative

1993

1993 – The S. Dale High Family assumes full ownership of High Industries Inc. and its affiliated operating companies.

1994

1994 – High Family Partnership is formed by the S. Dale High Family, seeking growth through development and acquisition of real estate

1998

1998 – The S. Dale High Family assumes the role of general partner in High Properties, the primary asset-holding real estate company

2003

2003 - Lancaster fabrication facilities recertified for OSHA Star VPP status.

2004

2004 - Williamsport fabrication facilities cited as winners of the Pennsylvania Governor's Award for Excellence in Safety, also know as the PENNSAFE award.

2005

2005 – Suzanne M. High Schenck, S. Dale High’s daughter, is active on The High Family Council and chairs The High Family Assembly

2006

2006 - High Steel awarded 16,524 ton contract for the I-95/I-695 Interchange, Phase 1, in Baltimore, MD.

2007

2007 - Williamsport fabrication facilities certified for OSHA Star VPP status.

2008

2008 - High Steel awarded 19,400-ton contract for I-495 HOT Lanes in Fairfax County, VA.

2013

2013 - High Steel awarded 50,000-ton contract for the approach spans of the New NY Bridge (Tappan Zee) in Rockland County, NY

2014

2014 - High Steel Structures began fabricating steel for the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge, in the largest contract in the company's history (Photo courtesy of Tappan Zee Constructors)

2015

2015 - Our company founder, the late Sanford H. High, was inducted into the ARTBA Foundation'sTransportation Development Hall of Fame.

2016

2016 - The Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences begins a new era by opening the doors of its consolidated campus in Greenfield Corporate Center, with extensive renovations designed by Greenfield Architects and completed by High Construction Company

2017

The S. Dale High Leadership Center opened in September 2017 as "A catalyst for bringing people together" that honors the leadership and entrepreneurship of S. Dale High.
