Highlands company history timeline

1875

Highlands was founded in 1875 after its two founders, Samuel Truman Kelsey and Clinton Carter Hutchinson, drew lines from Chicago to Savannah and from New Orleans to New York City.

1880

In the early 1880’s the town contained 8 country stores specializing in groceries, hardware, and general merchandise, a post office, a hotel and boarding house for summer guests, a public library, four churches, and a first class school.

1883

In 1883, in response to growing sympathy for the plight of the crofters, the Napier Commission was established to investigate their condition.

1885

The Moccasin War is a big part of the history of Highlands, NC. In 1885, Highlands was a “dry” town which means selling alcohol wasn’t allowed.

1886

Finally, in 1886, the possibility of future evictions was legally eliminated with Parliament’s passage of the Crofters Holdings Act, which was grounded on the so-called three Fs: fair rent, free sale (the right to become an owner-occupier), and fixity of tenure.

1918

Unfortunately, the sanatorium burned down in February 1918 from an accidental fire, but the legacy of Mary Lapham and her contribution to the tuberculosis epidemic lives on.

1920

Very little changed until the late 1920’s, when the Cullasaja River was dammed, forming Lake Sequoyah, to provide hydroelectric power.

1928

Golf was a huge driving force in the history of Highlands, NC. In 1928, Highlands Country Club opened its doors.

1930

In 1930, he went on to win the Grand Slam.

1931

By the time the Chamber of Commerce was established in 1931, the town’s population had increased to 500 with 2,500 to 3,000 summer guests.

1975

As written above, The Highlands are a region in Scotland but nowadays there is another way in which Scotland is organised and that is by councils. It took hundreds of years to transform the shires to counties and in 1975 the local government counties were abolished and were replaced by regions and districts and islands council areas.

1992

Since 1992, tens of thousands of individuals have taken the HAB for career guidance.

1996

The regions and districts were themselves abolished in 1996, in favour of unitary Scottish council areas and one of these councils is Highland council, the largest in Scotland, and covers most of the land area in the Scottish Highlands.
