The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Highway Maintenance Worker 2s to join the team out of Seattle in the Northwest Region. Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, this position is a member of the regional pavement marking and Incident Response Team (IRT). Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, this position is responsible for maintenance of highway longline striping, thermoplastic, reflective pavement marking (RPM), and Incident Response during off season period, to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This position performs a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. This position is critical in reducing congestion by removing incidents as quickly and safely as possible to restore the state highway transportation system to its maximum operational capacity. The IRT members are the WSDOT's first line personnel responding to daily emergencies. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment with focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
What to Expect
Striping season typically runs April through October, while IRT season spans October through Match, with both being weather dependent. Typical schedule is 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour day shifts, and may include weekends and holidays for business needs or to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. During peak striping season, this position will require extensive out of town travel for weeks at a time, returning only on weekends. Must be able to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call. Work alternates and emergency shifts as assigned. Respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed. May work more than 40 hours per week due to business needs.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:
* Operate Class A, B and C highway equipment.
* During striping season, perform day-to-day pavement marking maintenance activities operate various equipment.
* Serve as an Incident Responder outside of striping season, coordinating with Washington Station Patrol (WSP), Traffic Management Center (TMC), other emergency responders, Incident Response Lead Technician, and Maintenance Supervisor to expedite clearance of collisions, abandoned vehicles, and work towards resolving incidents within 90 minutes.
* Continuously patrol highways during congested traffic periods.
* Perform daily equipment checks; report any damaged equipment.
* Report time and document inventories, maintenance actions; track, document, and report daily work activities in DOT Time and striping log book.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:
* Performing roadway maintenance: Ability to perform roadway maintenance, truck driving, heavy equipment operation, or Traffic Incident Management.
* Operation and Control: Ability to control operations of equipment or systems while monitoring high speed traffic in a high stress environment.

* Valid Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
* Experience as an emergency responder with exposure to vehicle collisions and other incidents.
* Experience using 2-way radio to communicate with dispatch and other responders.
