T.H. Midgley leased it from the Hillsdale School District in 1915.
Leasing issues cast doubt on the future of the hospital; as the Midgley’s lease was due to expire in 1920, with the school board taking over the building as an annex.
In 1920, the community called on the Hillsdale Common Council to organize a hospital board to ensure a facility would continue to serve the residents of the county.
An open house was held on January 15, 1921 for the public, who were encouraged to bring donations of groceries and canned goods to stock the hospital’s larder for patients.
By 1925 it had been reduced to 15.8 per 1,000, and the life expectancy of Americans as a whole began a dramatic rise.
The first hospital plan was introduced in Dallas, Texas, in 1929.
In 1930, Americans spent $2.8 billion on health care—$23 per person and 3.5 percent of the Gross Domestic Product.
This new power to extend life, interacting with the deepest instinctual impulse of all living things—to stay alive—has had consequences that our society is only beginning to comprehend and address. In 1937, after a year-long discussion, Common Council approved participation in a program sponsored by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, to build a new 50-60 bed hospital.
In 1938, a corporation called the Hillsdale Community Health Center was formed and in less than a year the Public Works Administration approved a grant of $111,935 for the building.
In 1940 the spirit carried on as the new Hillsdale Hospital was dedicated at its current location, where the outside facade remains to this day.
By 1960, as the medical revolution was quickly gaining speed, the economically flawed private health care financing system was fully in place.
