Hillsdale Hospital company history timeline

1915

T.H. Midgley leased it from the Hillsdale School District in 1915.

1920

Leasing issues cast doubt on the future of the hospital; as the Midgley’s lease was due to expire in 1920, with the school board taking over the building as an annex.

In 1920, the community called on the Hillsdale Common Council to organize a hospital board to ensure a facility would continue to serve the residents of the county.

1921

An open house was held on January 15, 1921 for the public, who were encouraged to bring donations of groceries and canned goods to stock the hospital’s larder for patients.

1925

By 1925 it had been reduced to 15.8 per 1,000, and the life expectancy of Americans as a whole began a dramatic rise.

1929

The first hospital plan was introduced in Dallas, Texas, in 1929.

1930

In 1930, Americans spent $2.8 billion on health care—$23 per person and 3.5 percent of the Gross Domestic Product.

This new power to extend life, interacting with the deepest instinctual impulse of all living things—to stay alive—has had consequences that our society is only beginning to comprehend and address. It was only around 1930 that the power of the doctor to cure and ameliorate disease began to increase substantially, and that power has continued to grow nearly exponentially ever since.

1937

In 1937, after a year-long discussion, Common Council approved participation in a program sponsored by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, to build a new 50-60 bed hospital.

1938

In 1938, a corporation called the Hillsdale Community Health Center was formed and in less than a year the Public Works Administration approved a grant of $111,935 for the building.

1940

In 1940 the spirit carried on as the new Hillsdale Hospital was dedicated at its current location, where the outside facade remains to this day.

1960

By 1960, as the medical revolution was quickly gaining speed, the economically flawed private health care financing system was fully in place.

1972

First published in 1972, Imprimis is one of the most widely circulated opinion publications in the nation with over six million subscribers.

2018

The following is adapted from a talk delivered on board the Crystal Symphony on July 25, 2018, during a Hillsdale College educational cruise to Hawaii.

It also won the 2018 A+ Safety Rating for overall Hospital safety grade, and was awarded the State of Michigan Obstetric Quality Award.
