Hofstra University company history timeline

1935

Hofstra was founded in 1935 on land donated by businessman William S. Hofstra.

In 1935 the trustees decided to open a branch of New York University in the residence, previously the home of the Hofstras, on the property.

1937

Hofstra's original logo was a seal created by Professor of Art Constant van de Wall in 1937.

1939

The first four-year commencement took place in 1939.

In 1939, Hofstra celebrated its first four-year commencement, graduating a class of 83 students.

1950

In 1950, Calkins Gymnasium was the site of the first Shakespeare Festival.

1960

After spending his freshman year at the University of Alabama, he earned a degree (1960) in political science from Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York.

He studied law briefly at Brooklyn Law School before founding (1960) Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities with his wife, Ruth, who worked on Wall Street after earning a degree in psychology from Queens College, City University of New York.

1963

With the approval of the New York State Board of Regents, Hofstra became Long Island's first private university on March 1, 1963.

In 1963, the college added graduate courses and programs and was renamed Hofstra University, the name it carries until today.

Founded in 1963, the Hofstra University Museum of Art is nationally recognized by the American Alliance of Museums.

1966

The university offered its first doctoral degree in 1966.

Hofstra was authorized by the Board of Regents to offer its first doctoral degrees in 1966.

1968

In 1968, a three-bank Aeolian pipe organ was donated to Hofstra by John T. Ricks and Jane Ricks King, in the name of their late parents, Mr. and Mrs.

2006

In 2006, Carol started at Hofstra University in the admissions department in operations where she was responsible for importing student data from third-party media into Hofstra’s Banner system as well as managing that data and maintaining files for each.

Before coming to Hofstra in 2006, Carol worked in New York City for 20 years where she had an amazing career at a major advertising agency, working in a global business for the managing director with major top brands in television, print and radio.

2008

When Madoff’s operations collapsed in December 2008 amid the global economic crisis, he reportedly admitted the dimensions of the scam to members of his family.

2009

In June 2009 federal judge Denny Chin gave Madoff the maximum sentence of 150 years in prison.

2010

In 2010, it partnered with the New York State Office of Cultural Education to establish the New Netherland Research Center, with matching funds from the State of the Netherlands.

2014

In 2014, an opportunity became available in Human Resources and Andrea left Drama & Dance for a full-time position in HR. Eventually, Andrea's journey at Hofstra brought her to the Zarb School of Business where she held a few different roles until becoming the Administrative Assistant.

2015

In 2015, Carol decided it was an opportunity to move into the center of the University at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business.

Publications informing visitors of the art come accompanied by an insert that corrects the dates originally printed on the page: March 31-August 14, 2020.

The exhibit was intended to be showcased in 2020, to pay tribute to the 100-year anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification.
