In 1951, Dorothy finally persuaded Kemmons to take a break so they packed up the children, all five of them, and head to Washington, D.C. to visit the national landmarks.

1952

In 1952 he created a brand of affordable hotels where everyday families could enjoy a consistently clean and friendly environment.

1952: First Holiday Inn hotel opened in Memphis, TN, USA by Kemmons Wilson.

1954

After a rocky start, their first franchised Holiday Inn opened in Clarksdale, MS in 1954.

1957

In 1957, they had their first public offering with 120,000 shares at $9.75.

1962

Kemmons continued to innovate even while Holiday Inn was growing at an astronomical rate of two Holiday Inn openings every week by 1962.

1965

1965: Holiday Inn embraced technological innovation during its expansion, contracting IBM to design and implement the chain’s Holidex system.

1967: Holiday Inn Leiden opens in the Netherlands, the first Holiday inn to open in Europe.

1988

By 2003 the business had changed from domestic brewer to an international hospitality retailer and on 15 April InterContinental Hotel Group PLC became a stand alone hotel company listed on the London and New york stock exchanges.
