Holiday Stationstores company history timeline

1939

By 1939 Thomas Cook was advertising holidays by air with a week in Cannes, in the south of France, costing £15/5s (about £930 in today’s money) – well beyond the financial reach of most people.

1973

1973: Owners Abroad (Wholesale) Ltd. is formed.

1974

Thomson Holidays was soon to become market leader, its position secured after the demise of Clarksons, part of the massive Court Line group, which went bust in 1974 after the first global oil crisis hit demand and forced up prices.

1978

Nancy and Dwight Thompson started Holiday Tours in 1978, offering to local people the opportunity to travel in North America on deluxe tours at affordable prices.

1980

In 1980, the first motorcoach was purchased, and from that small beginning, the company has grown into a fleet of Deluxe Prevost Motorcoaches serving the travel needs of over 50,000 passengers annually.

1982

1982: Company changes name to Owners Abroad Group Plc and lists on London secondary market.

1984

By then, Owners Abroad had sold part of the company in a public listing on the London secondary market, raising the capital not only to acquire Falcon Leisure but to begin a steady diet of acquisitions, including that of the youth-oriented tour operator 2twentys, added in 1984.

1991

ITH also began cruise operations, forming Encore Cruises in 1991.

1992

Talks broke off, however; instead, Owners Abroad sold a 10 percent stake to Westdeutsche Landesbank, through its Thomas Cook travel subsidiary, based in the United Kingdom, in 1992.

1996

At last, in 1996, after other members of First Choice's management threatened to quit, Baron was packed off with a £650,000 severance check.

1996: Peter Long becomes CEO, announces three-year restructuring plan.

1998

By 1998, First Choice was ready to begin an extended acquisition drive.

2000

The company was also enjoying a reputation for quality, with Air 2000 winning a number of awards for being among the United Kingdom's best charter airlines.

The company took full control of Holiday Hypermarkets in 2000.

2002

The two companies also agreed to begin preparations for a launch of a new joint-venture cruise company to begin operations possibly by 2002.

2007

The golden age of package holidays was finally over, with the ‘big four’ becoming the ‘big two’ in 2007 as Thomson merged with First Choice, and Thomas Cook with Airtours.

2016

Thomas Cook, which celebrated its 175th anniversary in July 2016, has experienced a turbulent few years, and package holiday operators – which gave so many people their first taste of foreign travel – have a much lower share than a decade ago.
