Holiday Tours company history timeline

1978

Nancy and Dwight Thompson started Holiday Tours in 1978, offering to local people the opportunity to travel in North America on deluxe tours at affordable prices.

1980

In 1980, the first motorcoach was purchased, and from that small beginning, the company has grown into a fleet of Deluxe Prevost Motorcoaches serving the travel needs of over 50,000 passengers annually.

1990

1990 EU Package Travel Directive introduced, offering protection to travellers on packages in the case of a tour-operator or airline failure

2004

2004 Over the last decade the total holiday market has grown by almost two thirds, with some 43m holidays taken by Brits.

2007

The golden age of package holidays was finally over, with the ‘big four’ becoming the ‘big two’ in 2007 as Thomson merged with First Choice, and Thomas Cook with Airtours.

2016

Thomas Cook, which celebrated its 175th anniversary in July 2016, has experienced a turbulent few years, and package holiday operators – which gave so many people their first taste of foreign travel – have a much lower share than a decade ago.

Dave Richardson is the author of Let’s Go – A History of Package Holidays and Escorted Tours (Amberley Publishing, 2016). For more information, visit www.historyofpackagetours.co.uk
