In 1910, Doctor Holzer converted a house in downtown Gallipolis into the first seven-bed hospital.
As the need grew, the original 25-bed wing of the new Holzer Hospital on Cedar Street was completed in 1917, and continued to expand.
The Holzers purchased four adjoining city lots and the home in 1918 for $5,700.00.
Holzer meantime opened the area’s first school of nursing in 1920.
Charles Holzer organized construction of the Silver Bridge in 1928, joining the capitals of Ohio and West Virginia; purchased land for an airport; and initiated the first air ambulance service in Ohio.
At his urging, a medical partnership known as the Holzer Clinic was formed in 1950 with six physicians: Drs.
In 1968, Holzer Hospital and the Medical Center Hospital merged, as did Holzer Clinic and Gallipolis Clinic.
After outgrowing its downtown location, Holzer Medical Center opened on Jackson Pike in 1972 with 269 beds.
