Attend to the physical needs and personal care of special education students with special needs on campus. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher and assist in group activities. QUALIFICATIONS: Education: * High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency or higher. Special Knowledge/Skills: * Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics * Ability to work well with children with disabilities * Ability to communicate effectively in English * Ability to follow verbal and written instructions * Ability to maintain confidentiality * Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds EXPERIENCE Experience working with children preferred MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES * Provide instruction to students under direct supervision of teacher. * Conduct instructional exercises and implement specialized interventions and strategies for Newcomers/ELL students assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups. * Attend to students with physical disabilities according to their individualized needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning. * Attend to students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene. This may include performing basic medical procedures under the training of a registered nurse such as tube feeding and suctioning a student with a tracheotomy * Assist in classroom management. * Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention, including restraining disruptive or dangerous physical behavior as needed. * Conduct parent involvement activities. * Assist in group activities. * Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs * Responsible for supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom including lunchroom, bus duty, and playground. * Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays as needed. * Help maintain neat and orderly classroom. * Help with inventory, care, and instructional resources. * Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports. * Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers as needed. * Must be team oriented and able to assist in the care and safety of all special needs children on the campus. * Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students. * Assist in maintaining routine in the absence of the teacher * Maintain a neat and orderly area * Assist in inventory, care and maintanence of equipment. * Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance. * Participate in department meetings and special events as assigned. * Must maintain confidentiality * Perform other duties as assigned WORKING CONDITIONS: Equipment Used: Uses wheelchair lift, ramps, Hoyer lift and other equipment as required.
