Prepare visit/shift reports, updates/summarizes patient records, and confers with other health care disciplines in providing optimum patient care.

Support patient sick call within the limits of licensure. Record history, vital signs and gathers other appropriate data for utilization during physician's sick call. Treat inmates with problems according to established policies and procedures and refer other medical problems to the appropriate clinician
Assist clinician with sick call or minor surgical procedures
Ensure physician/nursing orders are implemented. Use problem-oriented medical records system to chart using SOAP format
Assist with rounds in the infirmary (where appropriate), a minimum of once per shift and record nurse's notes on all inmates. Identify symptoms, reactions and progress of patients on a periodic basis, chart and report problems to supervisor
Administer medications, including injections
Ensure prescribed medications are administered as ordered
Apply knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in dispensing medications
Maintain security while dispensing medications and be continually cognizant of the potential hazard of drug hoarding and trafficking among inmates
Accurately document all medications on the Medication Administration Record (MAR), including patient declines or patients off the housing unit at the time of the medication pass
Update the MAR as needed
Accurately review MARs at each medication pass, identify medications that require reorders or renewals, and that administered medications are signed for immediately
Assure medications are ordered correctly
Maintain neatness of the medication cart, medication room and other work areas, stocks as needed. Ensure that the medication cart is ready for subsequent medication passes
Maintain accountability for narcotic medications
Maintain accountability, destroy and properly dispose of all needles and syringes
Be knowledgeable of infection control guidelines and use good universal technique
Implement procedures for patient transfers to medical facilities, outside health providers, or transfer within the correctional system
Prepare regularly scheduled reports and special reports as necessary
Participate in in-service education, obtaining at least 12 hours annually
Encourages, participates, and supports safety program components including development, education, training, and communications regarding mandatory OSHA trainings and employee health and safety programs

Qualifications
