What is a home housekeeper and how to become one

Updated January 8, 2025
3 min read

A home housekeeper works inside of a client's home and makes sure that it is clean. Unlike other housekeepers, who work in hotels, hospitals, or other businesses, home housekeepers work exclusively in client homes. They can be employed by only one household or visit multiple homes during the week. A home housekeeper conducts all of the cleaning duties inside of a home such as vacuuming, mopping floors, and dusting. Often they take care of additional cleaning duties such as doing the laundry or washing dishes. Home housekeepers need to have excellent attention to detail in order to spot any hidden messes and plenty of physical stamina to operate cleaning equipment.

Home housekeepers need to know how to use cleaning supplies and keep all kinds of surfaces clean. Those skills are usually learned on the job instead of in a classroom. In fact, very few home housekeepers have a bachelor's degree.

Home housekeepers earn an average salary of $20,922 a year. Finding work as a home housekeeper should be pretty easy as the demand is expected to grow a whopping 36% by 2028.
