HSLDA was founded by Michael Farris in 1983 for the purpose of defending homeschooling families.
Holt died in 1985, and Moore found himself marginalized by new homeschool leaders who did not consider him, as a Seventh Day Adventist, “Christian” enough.
In 1990, Moore appealed vainly to the homeschool community to remain united even as homeschool groups and organizations were increasingly explicitly Christian, often requiring the signing of statements of faith and excluding secular homeschoolers.
A high point of HSLDA's existence was its central role in the 1994 defeat of language in bill H.R. 6.

HSLDA's speech and debate league broke off to form the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association in 2001.
Inspired by Mike Farris’ book The Joshua Generation, Generation Joshua was founded in 2003 by Farris, Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) President Mike Smith, and the HSLDA Board of Trustees.
Generation Joshua has also annually hosted a summer leadership camp (iGovern) since 2004.
That same year, Patrick Henry College was founded by Michael Farris, who was the college's president until 2006.
