Description Phlebotomist Position Code: Phleb-6120 Department: Laboratory Safety Sensitive: YES Reports to: Director/Manager/Supervisor Exempt Status: NO All KHI employees are expected to perform their respective tasks and duties in such a way that supports KHI's vision to be among the kindest, highest, quality health systems in the country.
A phlebotomist is expected to have a well-rounded skill set of venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all demographic types while adhering to the order of draw and ensuring proper patient identification. A phlebotomist will ensure that each patient order is collected using proper technique including positive patient identification, AIDET, sterile technique, anxiety reducers, and excellent customer service. Minimizing recollects due to QNS, hemolysis, mislabeling, or improper tube collect is our common goal. A blood culture contamination rate of less than the standard is expected. Providing the medical technologist with quality specimens free of contamination is the primary goal.
Key Responsibilities [List of material responsibilities and essentials duties which must be completed in achieving the objectives of the position]
* Properly obtain venous and capillary blood samples assuring proper patient identification and labeling of those samples ranging in age from neonates to geriatric.
* Use the hospital LIS system to collect and receive samples, cancel specimens for necessary reasons, reprint labels, etc.
* Participate in proper inventory control by stocking phlebotomy areas including carts, draw stations, and phlebotomy supply room while checking inventory for acceptability and expiration dates.
* Treat patients with the utmost courtesy and respect.
* Be present and ready to work for all scheduled shifts. Be versatile and willing to help cover other shifts in times of higher workloads, call offs, vacations, and short staffing.
* Properly care for the electronic tools the organization provides for you; charge Vocera batteries, disinfect PDAs, fill mobile printers with labels, etc.
* Complete initial and annual trainings, yearly competencies, CAP assignments, and any paper form proficiencies assigned by management.
* Perform any and all other pertinent duties requested by lab supervisors, the Laboratory director, and members of upper management.
* Be able to focus on proper collection techniques while working in diverse environments such as outpatient, inpatient, surgical, emergency room, and traumas.
Inpatient/Emergency Department
* Perform I.V. line starts for blood draw and cap for future I.V. use
* Respond to codes, traumas, and rapid responses to obtain blood samples, administer chest compressions, and assist in CPR if needed.
* Phlebotomist should keep in mind that the ER is their primary area but in down times they will need to float to inpatient areas and help collect inpatient orders.
Outpatient
* Perform full registration including updating demographics, checking insurance, and obtaining signature and initials for all paperwork.
* Minimize denials and ensure accurate data entry.
Qualifications [Statements regarding minimum educational and experience qualifications, required proficiencies with specialized knowledge, computer proficiencies, military service, required certifications, etc.]
Education: High School graduate or equivalent.
Certification: BLS through American Heart Association or American Red Cross if working in inpatient/Emergency Department areas.
Knowledge and Skills:
* Must be able to handle stressful situations inherent to collection and dispatch of urgent medical laboratory testing results.
* Must possess good organizational skills and have the ability to deal effectively with the hospital staff.
Preferences [Preferred attributes for the position which are not absolutely required in the minimum qualifications (i.e., multi-lingual, master's degree)]
Experience:
* 1 year of phlebotomy experience.
* Previous laboratory experience.
Certification/Licensure: NHA, ASCP or other nationally recognized certification in Phlebotomy.

* Frequent walking of about 3-4 miles per day is to be expected.

Essential Job Functions:
Functions as Phlebotomist performing blood draws by venipuncture for all ages.
Monitors quality control on all supplies, equipment, and appliances at all drawing sites.
Performs insurance verification through the computer using the intranet, practice management system, and phone.
Greets and checks in patients onto the practice management schedule, collects co-payments, opens, and closes postings of all collections, and submission of money bags to accounting.
Prepares and provides instructions for collection of patient samples.
Learns and maintains all of recording and filing systems within department.
Delivers all Stat or Critical results to provider or RN staff as needed.
Inputs laboratory orders for El Rio and reference laboratories in electronic health record system or laboratory information system.
Retrieves patient results from all laboratories systems upon requests.
Complies with all laboratory and facility policies and procedures.
Orders supplies needed for specimen collection, specimen transport, and office supplies from department and reference laboratories.
Responsible to ensure all sample collection supplies are of quality.
Provides a work environment safe and free from hazards; immediately address or inform management of safety issues or potential hazards; adhere to Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
Participates in all safety programs, which may include assignment to an emergency response team.
Process and separates blood from serum and prepares samples for testing.
Prepares all send out samples to reference laboratories according to reference laboratories requirements.
Maintain exceptional level of customer service; address and resolve complaints; serve as an example by providing excellent service to internal and external customers, employees, and patients.
Resolve and troubleshoot test in question or missing specimens from reference laboratories.
Resolve all missing encounters and resubmit missing charges.
Provide support for patient invoices from reference laboratories.
Coordination of dispatch and courier pick up requests for STAT specimens.
Travel to other clinic locations when needed.
Consults with clinicians and medical staff on matters related to laboratory services.
Maintains phlebotomy, PKU, Stat, redraw, rejection, temperature, and critical/panic logs.
Maintains a clean, safe, and hygienic work environment in compliance with all Policies and Procedures including but not limited to work areas, workstations, examination rooms, hand washing, infection prevention and control etc. for this position.
Demonstrates an understanding of and proficiency with the application of all compliance and reporting requirements respective to Joint Commission Certification (JCC) standards.
Minimum Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Certificate from accredited school for Phlebotomy and/or at least two (2) years' experience as a Phlebotomist or Medical Laboratory Assistant or Preferred Patient Care Technician (PCT)
If applicable, equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, and must be directly related to the functions and responsibilities of the job.
Required Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations:
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers.
Level I fingerprint clearance card: current valid and in good standing or have applied for it within seven working days after beginning employment.
Employees in this position are required to have reliable transportation that can meet any operational reassignments of the organization during the workday. If an employee is driving during work hours, the employee is required to possess a valid driver's license and must comply with Arizona vehicle insurance requirements.

Bilingual (English/Spanish) with the ability to speak, read and write in both languages.
