In 1807, fresh off a humiliating defeat by the French during the War of the Fourth Coalition, the Germans instituted a series of vast, sweeping societal reforms.
A Bill for Establishing a System of Public Education later took it's place and was passed in 1817.
Upon graduation in 1819 Mann chose law as a career.
The result was the establishment in 1837 of a state board of education, charged with collecting and publicizing school information throughout the state.
He started a biweekly Common School Journal in 1838 for teachers and lectured widely to interested groups of citizens.
Referred to as the first great American advocate of public education, Horace Mann embarked on a journey to Europe in 1843 to evaluate national school systems.
Mann resigned the secretaryship in 1848 to take the seat of former Pres.
MacCracken enlisted the interest of Helen Miller Gould Shepard, who, in memory of her father, Jay Gould, had already provided funds for the erection of the Gould Memorial Library and a dormitory (Gould Hall). With her aid the Hall of Fame was established in 1900.
On March 18, 1929, construction began on a two-story, 30-room Spanish style school building.
In July, the school was named Horace Mann School, and 307 students and 11 teachers entered its doors in Kindergarten through sixth grade on December 9, 1929.
The first graduating class of 30 students was in June 1930.
