1978

After securing a grant that was to end following three years of service, the Howard Clinic began providing service in February, 1978 and the Bryant Clinic opened in March of 1978.

1993

In November 1993, MERCY HEALTH PLAN of New Jersey on behalf of HMO Blue began marketing to the eligible Aged, Blind Disabled (ABD) population in Camden County, NJ.

1994

In 1994, MERCY HEALTH PLAN of New Jersey on behalf of HMO Blue expanded into Essex and Hudson Counties.

1996

By the end of 1996, MERCY HEALTH PLAN of New Jersey on behalf of HMO Blue was in 14 counties.

1997

By May 1997, MERCY HEALTH PLAN of New Jersey on behalf of HMO Blue had reached 80,000 members.

1998

In March 1998, New Jersey began offering its version of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) called NJ KidCare.

In 1998 the two organizations, East River Health Care (formerly the Miner-Hamlin Health Care Project) and Tri-County Health Care merged and formed Horizon Health Care, Inc. (Horizon) to better serve their patients.

1999

In March 1999, MERCY HEALTH PLAN of New Jersey on behalf of HMO Blue officially changed its name to Horizon/Mercy.

2001

In 2001, Horizon/Mercy started its Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Program, which utilizes nursing interventions and innovative case management techniques to reduce the hospital admission rates and improve the quality of life for Horizon/Mercy's members with CHF.

2003

In January 2003, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey acquired full ownership of Horizon/Mercy.

2005

On July 13, 2005, the Family Health Care Coverage Act was signed into law by Acting Governor Richard J. Codey, expanding NJ FamilyCare for working adults and improving access to approximately 264,000 children.

2009

In December 2009, Horizon NJ Health reached more than 435,000 members and attained a 46% market share.

2012

Horizon BCBSNJ recognized as one “The Best Insurance Companies in 2012” by Insure.com.

2014

2014 results from Horizon BCBSNJ’s patient-centered program showed a 6 percent higher rate of diabetes control, 8 percent higher rate in colorectal cancer screenings, 5 percent lower rate in emergency room visits, and 9 percent lower total cost of care.

2016

Horizon BCBSNJ ranks #3 in the 2016 InformationWeek Elite 100 Users of Business Technology.

2017

Horizon BCBSNJ introduces a Dual Special Needs Plan for the 2017 plan year for members eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.

2018

Horizon BCBSNJ announces plan to use federal tax refunds to provide $150 million to customers in 2018 and for $125 million multi-year investment to improve care.
