1993

1993: Hospice is included as a nationally guaranteed benefit under President Clinton’s health care reform proposal.

1995

History of Hospice: In 1995, ninety eight percent of all hospices were declared non-profit institutions.

1997

1997: The growing end-of-life movement focuses national attention on quality of life at the end of life, need for increased public awareness and physician education

1998

In 1998, the agency was licensed to provide hospice care and then changed its name to Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care.

2000

By the year 2000, there were well over 3,000 hospices and palliative programs in the United States.

2001

She worked in acute care and short term rehab before starting in home care in 2001.

2005

2005: The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology release new guidelines about treating heart failure that includes recommendations that hospice care education be provided early in the course of an illness.

2008

Barbara Raby, RPH, became part of the Franciscan Hospice Team in 2008 serving as the pharmacist.

2010

Jan Louiselle, R.N., joined the Franciscan Hospice Team in 2010.

2011

Karen Christensen, LCSW has been serving as a social worker for Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care since 2011.

Furthermore, since the beginning of 2011, Medicare has mandated more frequent doctor visits if a patient remains on hospice beyond six months.

2012

Agnes Dion, R.N. joined the Franciscan Hospice Team in 2012.

She has been a nurse since 2012 and has worked in home care from the beginning.

2014

She has been a full time physical therapist with Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care since 2014.

In 2014, 40 years after the opening of Connecticut Hospice, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and its affiliates celebrated four decades of providing hospice care in the US.

2015

In 2015 she became LSVT Big certified in order to work more effectively with people who have Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. “It is a gift to be able to work in an environment where the dignity and needs of the patient truly come first.”

48 percent of Medicare decedents were enrolled in hospice at the time of death (in 2016). Median length of service was 24 days.
