The second path provided care via a free-standing program which Cindy incorporated as Lake Superior Hospice in 1979 and this program continues to provide services to our community today.
In February 1983, the public was invited to a viewing of the film “Hospice”, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center.
The first hospice patient was admitted to our program in September 1984.
Started in 1984, Arbor Hospice has been providing expert, compassionate end-of-life care longer than any other provider in our community.
Since 1985, Angela Hospice has been providing a crucial service to the community of southeast Michigan.
In 1994, the Angela Hospice Care Center opened as the first freestanding inpatient hospice facility in Michigan.
In 1994, our offices moved from the Hillsdale Community Health Center to an office in a local dentist building in Hillsdale.
An extension of My Nest is Best, the Angela Hospice Prenatal Hospice Program was designed in 2000 for parents facing the knowledge that their unborn child may not survive or may be born with a life-limiting illness.
The first strategic planning session began in 2002.
In May 2003, our organization purchased an office building located at 124 S. Howell Street, Hillsdale.
After years of patience and prayer, permission to build an addition to the facility was granted, and Angela Hospice broke ground once again in 2008.
The addition opened its doors in April of 2010, doubling Angela Hospice’s inpatient capacity, even as our home care program reached an all-time high patient census.
In 2014 she was named a Visionary in Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Association for Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and was inducted into the Home Care and Hospice Hall of Fame by the National Association for Home Care and Hospice.
She retired from her work with Angela Hospice in 2015.
For the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2018, CMS set our rates which is now a two tiered system with an add on.
In 2018, Hospice of Hillsdale County provided 11,787 days of reimbursed care and 2 days of free care.
Income from special events in 2018 totaled $43,656.
In 2018, our volunteers contributed more than 2,048 hours which included companionship, respite, household chores, errands, transporting, fundraising, office and board work.
