Dr. Brown received a MD from the NYU School of Medicine & a Masters in Public Health from the Columbia University School of Public Health. He completed an internal medicine residency at Harlem Hospital & a neuroendocrinology fellowship at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, followed by academic appointments as Associate Physician at the Rockefeller University Hospital & Clinical Assoc. Professor of Public Health, Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is CEO at START Treatment & Recovery Centers (formerly the Addiction Research & Treatment Corporation) in Brooklyn, NY. He has served on the Board of Directors of the US Anti-Doping Agency, the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD), & the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS. A former President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), he has served on committees of the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) & the National Institute on Allergy & Infectious Diseases (NIAID). His current responsibilities include teaching health professionals, supervising the administrative support and delivery of medical care, & conducting biomedical & behavioral research. Dr. Brown’s scientific contributions have focused upon the sequellae of addiction and improving treatment of substance use disorders, resulting in over 100 peer-reviewed articles, chapters and published abstracts, reflecting investigator-initiated and collaborative research sponsored by NIDA, NIAID, and private industry. The New York Academy of Medicine, the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the American College of Physicians, & CPDD have bestowed the distinction of Fellow on Dr. Brown; ASAM has recognized him as Distinguished Fellow; he also serves as Medical Advisor to the National Football League. He is a Vietnam War veteran for which he received a Bronze Star for meritorious service. On November 13, 2019, the United States Mint announced Dr. Brown’s appointment to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) by the Treasury Secretary. A life-long numismatist since the age of 12 years, Dr. Brown was chosen as a representative of the general public to the CCAC, which serves as an informed, experienced and impartial resource to the Secretary of the Treasury and represents the interests of American citizens and collectors.
