It certainly wasn’t what Linda Ocker Mashburn had in mind when she and fellow nurse Rae Ann Gaserowski moved to Madison County, North Carolina, in 1971 to open a clinic in Hot Springs.
Until a five-year grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission put the Hot Springs Health Program on firm financial footing in 1972, it “operated on fees, volunteer labor, and a little foundation money.
That title endured until 1976 when the name of the hospital, which had grown by leaps and bounds, was changed to St Joseph’s Mercy Medical Center because it had come to be recognized as one of the most modern facilities of its kind in a seven-state area.
The Walnut clinic became the Marshall-Walnut Medical Center when it was relocated in 1978, and will move again when a new building near Marshall is completed.
In 1981, the name was changed to St Joseph’s Regional Health Center because it served a five-county area.
The same creativity and determination that saw the program through its first year were called upon again in 1986, when HSHP’s board of directors decided to forego federal funding to become self-supporting.
That building was used until 1991 when St Joseph’s Mercy Health Center opened at the current location of St Vincent Hot Springs’ main campus.
The name was then changed to St Joseph’s Mercy Health Center in 2001.
In 2012 as part of a multi-state branding initiative, the name changed to Mercy Hospital Hot Springs.
