At Houston Methodist, the Transplant Quality Coordinator position a registered nurse, responsible for working collaboratively with medical/surgical staff, department leadership, hospital leadership, and hospital quality and accreditation team members to ensure the regulatory compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation for Transplant Centers, United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS), Texas Department of Health Services (TDHS) and hospital accreditation agencies. This position assists program leadership with continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care delivered to the pre, post and LVAD patient populations through monitoring of clinical outcomes, of Transplant/VAD services including organizing, collecting validating compiling, analyzing, and reporting results of these services/programs. The Transplant Quality Coordinator position oversees development of policies and procedures and creating quality improvement processes associated with Transplantation/VAD while facilitating adherence with regulatory agencies. This position supports and promotes the organization-wide quality program.
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Communicates in an active, positive, and effective manner to all transplant team members, physicians and staff who are part of the interprofessional transplant program in order to facilitate quality activities and regulatory compliance goal attainment.
Collaborates with management in monitoring and evaluating quality of care and patient outcomes for the transplant/VAD patient population based on standards of care as well as the findings of nursing research, hospital policies/procedures and applicable patient care protocols.
Serves as a clinical resource to staff members. Fosters teamwork approach in all interactions with peers and team members and providing quality/compliance education in order to promote individual staff member accountability and responsibility. Proactive and effective in developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with physicians, management, and staff. Uses peer-to-peer accountability towards improvement of department score for turnover/retention/employee engagement
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Promotes department/service line understanding of the Transplant CMPI program. Supports and assists management and physicians in coordinating and facilitating CPI committee meetings and maintaining the MCPI documentation for the transplant center.
Maintains ongoing clinical data in support of assessment and improvement of quality of care. Prepares internal or external clinical data requests.
Facilitates collection of all clinical documents and data necessary in preparation for onsite review or regulatory response submission to any transplant regulatory agency. Participates as a liaison during certification/review site visits.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Collaborates with Transplant Services leadership and staff to ensure ongoing compliance with the requirements, regulations, and laws of local, state, and federal regulatory agencies for transplant, including UNOS and CMS. Updates department policies in collaboration with team to reflect current laws, regulations and requirements of the regulating bodies and works to ensure practice is consistent with regulatory requirements.
Facilitates an interprofessional approach to identify opportunities for performance improvement, facilitates change, assist with follow-up and evaluation of performance improvement activities as evidenced by defined metrics and achievement of defined outcomes. Facilitates the development of action plans in collaboration with staff and management. Makes recommendations for change in practice to improve patient outcomes.
In collaboration with administrative and physician leaders, develops and implements reporting processes regarding clinical quality across all organ transplant/VAD programs.
Analyzes and confirms data reported by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) including overseeing UNOS data entry audits in preparation for SRTR report publication.
Participates in the development, implementation, evaluation and revision of order sets, policies, and other documentation. Monitors outcomes of current policy, process/system changes and reports variances to appropriate management and staff.
Implements quality improvement projects involving data collection, validation, analysis, and reporting. Offers innovative solutions through participation in performance improvement projects. Contributes to department initiatives for quality and process improvement Identifies opportunities for improvement based on data analysis. Contributes to meeting department and organ program targets for quality and safety.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintains and submits accurate data for hospital-based statistics and regulatory agencies such as UNOS/UNET, CMS, and Medicaid in order to ensure proper department financial management.
Contributes to meeting department and organ program financial measures.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Participates in transplant-specific continuous learning and growth. Applies evidence-based practice to daily work, such as reviewing the professional literature and attending professional meetings and sharing with colleagues. * Works with therapy staff to ensure that periodic machine quality assurance is routinely and appropriately performed.
* Surveilles engineering/vendor staff work to ensure machine repairs and upgrades are adequately performed and machine performance verified.
* Provides consultation to physicians, and guidance to dosimetrists and therapists regarding best approaches to simulate, plan, image and treat patients to assure accurate delivery of prescribed radiation dosage to a specific human patient, and the associated risk.

* Provides documentation that radiotherapy treatment and simulation equipment meet accreditation and regulatory compliance requirements. Participates in the specification of the physics instrumentation used in the measurement and performance testing of therapeutic equipment.
* Participates in the development and management of quality control program for a radiation treatment facility that includes applicable facility accreditation requirements, and the review of policies and procedures pertaining to therapeutic radiation and its safe and appropriate use.

* Ensures that quality assurance is performed to verify proper functioning after installation, repair or upgrade of radiation treatment equipment and software. It includes acceptance testing of radiotherapy treatment and simulation equipment, calibration and characterization of radiation beams from therapeutic equipment including radiation quantity, quality, and distribution characteristics, and assessment of the mechanical and geometric optics for proper placement of the beam. It also includes calibration and/or verification of the physical and radiological characteristics of brachytherapy sources.
* Advances the implementation and management of dosimetric and beam delivery aspects of external beam delivery, brachytherapy irradiation and special procedures. External beam delivery aspects include treatment aids, beam modifiers, and geometrical arrangements. Special procedures are included for both external beam (e.g. radiosurgery, total body irradiation, total skin irradiation, intraoperative therapy) and brachytherapy (e.g. high dose rate, intravascular brachytherapy).
* Guides the acceptance testing, management, and supervision of computer systems used for treatment planning and calculation of treatment times or monitor units. This includes measurement and input of dosimetry data base and verification of output for external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy.
* Ensures the completion of periodic quality assurance and calibrations for radiation treatment equipment, software, and instrumentation in accordance to Part 25 Texas Administrative Code §289 as well as recommendations from vendors and professional organizations.
* Ensures that patient-specific quality assurance, including initial and periodic treatment plan checks and measurements if required, are performed on a timely manner.
* Coordinates and participates in the development and/or evaluation of a radiation safety program in a therapeutic radiation facility including written procedures for the protection of patients, workers, and the public, as well as in the protective shielding design and radiation safety surveys in a radiotherapy facility.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Delivers items in a timely manner, accurately, and efficiently. Completes deliveries and pick-ups within the established time standards.
Properly operates the pneumatic tube system to send medications through the system. Separates medications that cannot be transported through the pneumatic tube system to various nursing units. Understands how to utilize the pneumatic tube system and adhering to the established guidelines.
Separates specimens that cannot be transported through the pneumatic tube system to various laboratories such as Microbiology, Cytology, Histology, HLA, and others as needed.
Contributes towards improving department scores for patient satisfaction/experience through peer-to-peer accountability and providing timely transports.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Documents lab/pharmacy trips neatly, completely, and accurately on the appropriate courier log sheets during the shift. Maintains confidentiality of patient information as required by HIPAA by covering items during the delivery process. Adheres to accreditation and HIPPA guidelines and other regulations.
Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards. Follow safe handling of cytotoxic and bio-hazardous materials.
Properly utilizes the handheld radio when calling in all lab/pharmacy trips to dispatch. Uses radio etiquette when communicating to co-workers on the handheld radio.
Contributes to improving department quality and safety scores through peer-to-peer accountability.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Self-motivated to meet the standards of the Houston Methodist attendance policy, manage time effectively, prioritize daily tasks and minimize incidental overtime. Meets labor productivity standards by effectively managing established daily responsibilities and assignments.
Scans medications properly on computers and hand-held scanners before delivery to ensure fiscal accountability.
