Hub Group company history timeline

1971

Hub Group, Inc. was founded by Philip C. Yeager in Hinsdale, Illinois, in 1971.

1975

In 1975, Yeager and his wife set up a series of S corporations to expand their business.

He had been with the company since 1975, when he opened the company's Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania regional office.

1985

1985: Company begins soliciting Fortune 500 accounts.

Hub City Terminals was renamed Hub Group in 1985.

1989

In 1989, the company added a division called Hub Highway Services.

1990

Hub Group as a whole had sales of $350 million in 1990.

Up from the mere handful of employees Hub started with, by 1990 it had 350 employees, working out of 35 locations.

Hub Group also opened a subsidiary in Canada in 1990, and moved into the southern California market more aggressively by opening an office in San Diego.

The company also launched a subsidiary, Hub Group Distribution Services (HGDS), in 1990.

1990: Company installs sophisticated computer data exchange system.

1991

Hub Group took on the Sears account in 1991, signing a contract with Sears Logistic Service to handle all that company's intermodal freight needs.

1992

By 1992, the company had become by its own account the nation's largest intermodal shipping agent.

David Yeager became co-chairman of the company in 1992.

1993

Hub gained a major new client in 1993 when the giant detergent company Clorox Co. agreed to let Hub handle all its intermodal shipping for its cleaning products division.

1994

Soon after, Hub announced it was forming a joint venture with the Norton Lilly International Shipping Agency to move cargo over land for ocean carriers. It launched a division called Hub Group International in 1994, and focused first on international shipments within North America.

1995

In 1995, Phillip Yeager’s son, David Yeager, became chief executive officer of Hub Group.

1996

In March 1996 Hub Group went public, listing its stock on the NASDAQ. Its shares started out at $14, and a year later had zoomed up to over $27.

The joint venture was christened HLX. Hub also acquired American President Distribution Services in 1996, the international intermodal business division of a major shipping company, American President Companies Ltd.

1997

A year later, in 1997, the company became the first intermodal marketing company to top $1 billion in yearly revenue.

1998

Hub Group had 34 regional offices by 1998, when the company borrowed $100 million to begin purchasing all outstanding minority interests in the company's regional offices.

1999

In 1999, Hub worked out an agreement with several major railroads to let it manage rail containers.

Sales for fiscal 1999 were $1.3 billion, an increase of almost 15 percent over the previous year.

2000

Founded in 2000, NSD’s delivery network includes over 170 agent locations, which enables service to all United States zip codes.

2004

The company moved from a geography-based operation with multiple regional offices to a centralized operation with a single profit and loss center headquartered in Lombard, Illinois in 2004.

2005

Mark Yeager was appointed president and chief operating officer in April 2005.

2006

Hub Group acquired Memphis, Tennessee-based drayage company Comtrak Logistics for $48 million in 2006.

2008

Company CEO David Yeager became chairman of Hub Group in November 2008.

2017

In 2017, Hub Group acquired Estenson Logistics, a national provider of dedicated trucking with nearly 100 operating sites for approximately $306 million.

2018

In 2018, Hub Group acquired CaseStack Logistics, a consolidation and warehousing provider that predominantly operates in the consumer packaged goods and retail space, for $225 million.

2020

In 2020, Hub Group acquired NonstopDelivery, LLC (“NSD”) for $94.5 million.

2021

In 2021, Hub Group acquired Preston, MD based Choptank Transport for $130 million cash-on-hand.
