The Saint Croix River was opened to trade and travel in 1839 with the arrival of the steamer Palmyra.

1845

A post office was opened in Stillwater in 1845.

1849

The towns of Elizabeth and Buena Vista were laid out at the first meeting of the county board of supervisors in 1849.

Elizabeth was renamed Prescott in 1851.
