Born and raised in St. Louis, Mo. on a healthy diet of news programming, pop culture, black history and “snark,” Danielle C. Belton-daughter of loving “regular folk” and wife of no one-examines the irreverent side of American life.Currently, the Editor-in-Chief of the leading black interest news site, The Root, Belton is best known as the former creator and writer of the award-winning pop culture-meets-politics blog The Black Snob. Since being promoted to lead The Root in 2016, the award-winning site’s traffic has grown month-over-month by more than 300 percent, now reaching around 10-to-12 million readers per month. Before joining The Root, Belton was Editor-At-Large for black women’s news site Clutch Magazine Online, and was the first black woman to lead a writer's room in late night as the head writer for BET Networks’ NAACP Image Award-nominated talk show, Don’t Sleep, featuring former CNN news anchor T.J. Holmes in 2012.As a journalist, Belton has written for: The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Daily Beast, Essence Magazine, The Guardian, The American Prospect and many others. Earlier in her career, Belton was a blogger and online campaign manager for non-profits New Security Action/Win Without War and was an entertainment reporter and columnist for The Bakersfield Californian. A sought-after public speaker, Belton gave a lecture at Davidson College on race in journalism (2019), and was the keynote speaker for the Women’s March in Roanoke, Va. (2018) and for the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Baltimore Chapter’s Torchbearer’s Breakfast (2013). She was also a featured speaker and panelist during Yale University’s Black Solidarity Conference (2012) and Duke University’s “Race in Space” Conference (2013). She spoke at the National Association of Black Journalists’ annual conference in Philadelphia (2011); Essence Magazine’s Women’s Conference in New York (2010); and both Harvard University’s Black Policy Conference and Howard University’s School of Communications Job Fair (2009).Winner of several accolades, Belton is being honored in May 2019 with the Rita Henley Jensen Award by Women’s eNews. She was also named among the top 40 black stars in media by Rolling Out Magazine in 2016. An advocate for mental illness, Belton wrote about Bipolar Disorder for BP Magazine's online site. She also penned her own profile on her struggle with the disorder in BP Magazine summer 2011 and for the January 2012 edition of Essence Magazine.Belton currently lives in New York City.
