Humboldt Beacon company history timeline

1854

The first issue of the Humboldt Times was printed on September 2, 1854.

Established by E.D. Coleman in 1854, the Humboldt Times began publishing in what is known today as Old Town Eureka.

1858

By 1858, the tide had turned as Eureka was outpacing Union and had been named the permanent county seat.

1875

Another daily newspaper, the Humboldt Standard, began publishing in 1875.

1880

Over the next 20 years, the Times moved one block up F Street two times, settling in at Fourth and F by 1880.

1890

In addition to publishing this directory, in 1890 she ran the Eureka Art and Fashion Parlors where she sold clothes patterns and sewing accessories.

1892

1898

In 1898, the Times moved up another block to 624 Fourth St In its footsteps, the Standard moved into the old Times’ office at 502 Fourth St that same year

1914

The paper’s new site had been the location of the Sumner Carson mansion, built in 1914, which had been for sale for years.

1931

10, 1931, an early-morning fire started in a flue and quickly spread.

1939

Before being renamed Times Printing in 1939, the company was known as the Times Publishing Company.

1941

Such cooperation was a foreshadowing of May 1, 1941, when both papers were combined under one ownership, Eureka Newspapers Inc.

1946

In 1946 Arthur Smith bought Times Printing, thus cutting its ties to the Humboldt Times and becoming an independent company.

1954

In February 1954, the Humboldt Times celebrated its 100th year with a massive anniversary edition.

1955

In 1955 Arthur sold the business to his son-in-law and daughter, Charles and Gladys Strope.

1985

In 1985 Charles retired and completed the transition of ownership and management of Times Printing to his son, Lane Strope and Lane's wife, Susan.
