Humboldt School District company history timeline

1850

It was logical that commerce would begin at the best place to ford the river, and in 1850, a trading post—French Ford—was erected at the present site of Winnemucca.

1868

Humbolt School opened November of 1868 and was named after Wilhelm von Humboldt, German geographer and explorer.

He died in 1868 and is buried in Winnemucca's Pioneer Cemetery.

1869

The Central Pacific Railroad came into Winnemucca in 1869, transforming the humble trading post into a major shipping point for northern Nevada, southern Oregon and northeastern California.

1882

He died in 1882 following a long illness.

1901

The Shone House, which sits at 602 Bridge Street, was built by Thomas Shone in 1901.

1905

In 1905, after a fire destroyed Winnemucca's Armory Hall, Nixon decided to build an opera house for the people of this area.

1908

Citing his gratefulness to the small but growing town, he and wife Kate dedicated Nixon Opera House to the people of Winnemucca on July 17, 1908.

1909

The oldest portion of the current facility was built in 1909.

1912

The apartment building was constructed in 1912 by Bert Kluncy who turned out the cement blocks himself.

1913

The Winnemucca State Bank & Trust Co. opened for business on March 3, 1913.

1924

Originally a small, white-framed building that served Winnemucca's Catholic community for 40 years, it was transformed in 1924 by a San Francisco architect into a Spanish colonial mission style.

1976

The newest portion opened in the fall of 1976 as an educational complex for grades 7 – 12.

1982

In 1982 the two schools formed Humboldt Secondary Complex of grades 7 – 12.

2020

In August 2020, the Humboldt portion of this stone sign was reinstalled at the new entrance to Humboldt High School.

As of 2020 construction is wrapping up on a three year remodel.
