1874

Johnson says Hunting – which has a colorful history of being involved in a plethora of sectors from defense to airlines since its founding by Charles Hunting in 1874 – is not going backwards and will play to its core strengths.

1874 Charles Hunting establishes a shipping business in England.

1930

During the 1930’s, the brothers also backed an E&P venture, prospecting for oil in the Texas.

1944

1944 Percival Aircraft manufacturing operations are acquired.

1951

In 1951, the company expanded into the Canadian oil marketing and distribution market, establishing Gibson Petroleum Marketing.

1952

1952 The company launches Hunting Geophysics Ltd., pioneering the aerial geophysical prospecting market.

1953

As such, Hunting rolled out its geophysical prospecting operations onto an international scale, with the creation of a dedicated subsidiary, Hunting Geophysics, in 1953.

1957

In 1957, for example, the company decided to extend its engineering expertise into the growing field of heating and ventilation, forming a new subsidiary Hunting Mhoglas.

1962

1962 After further diversification, such as in plastics manufacturing, the company launches Hunting Light Industries.

1967

That operation was launched as a joint venture, Hunting Barnard Oilfield Services, in 1967, controlled at 60 percent by Hunting.

1967 The company begins providing services to the North Sea offshore oil industry.

1985

In 1985, for example, Hunting Gibson acquired the Hunting Group, which had remained the Hunting family's private investment vehicle for its controlling stakes in the three publicly listed companies.

1988

Barring a four-year stint in Aberdeen, U.K., much of Western Pennsylvania-born Johnson's professional life has been in Texas, and more specifically in America's oil and gas capital of Houston, where he first moved to in 1988.

1989

1989 The Hunting family merges its three publicly listed holdings into a single publicly listed entity, Hunting PLC.

1998

In 1998, for example, the company acquired Landell Industries, which expanded Hunting's position in the Gulf of Mexico market.

2002

2002 Roforge in France, which supplies valves to global energy industries, is acquired.

2004

In 2004, Hunting produced revenues of more than £1.25 billion ($2.4 billion).

2008

Boosted by the proceeds of restructuring and the sale of the Canadian midstream business, Gibson Energy in 2008, the company has since sought to consolidate its global footprint through organic investment and selective acquisition.

2011

The acquisition of the Titan Group in 2011 was the largest in the Company’s history significantly extending the range and utility of products in the wellbore from downhole instrumentation and perforating systems to access complex and unconventional reserves around the world.

2015

Any slowdown in Hunting's mature Western businesses often gets "balanced out" by its expansion in the East, particularly in Middle East and Southeast Asia, and it all once bottled down to holding firm during 2015-16 downturn.

That next emerging challenge for the OFS business is the oil and gas industry's craving for further efficiencies and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). "These are positive developments in the wake of the 2015-16 downturn.

2019

In August, it reported a first-half 2019 revenue of $508.9 million (up 15% on an annualized basis), with underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) up 6.2% to $77.4 million, and a reported profit from operations of $41.1 million.
