1955

1955 - The United States Supreme Court orders desegregation of all American schools with "all deliberate speed."

1963

Huntsville defied Wallace instead and became the first city to integrate its schools in September of 1963 (file)

1974

1974 - Huntsville begins forced busing to desegregate four elementary schools in northwest Huntsville - University Place, Cavalry Hill, Montview and Highlands.

1986

In 1986, Huntsville City Schools created the Lee Creative & Performing Arts Magnet Program.

2003

2003 - United States Supreme Court upheld the ability of the University of Michigan Law School to use race in determining admissions in order to achieve a diverse student body.

2011

2011 - Justice Department writes back 38 months later.

2012

2012 - Huntsville hires Washington attorney Maree Sneed, a desegregation law specialist, to assist on negotiations with the Justice Department.

2013

2013 - The Justice Department and Huntsville agree on plan to build several new schools across the city.

A $279 million capital improvements plan implemented in 2013 has led to significant renovation of many schools and the completion or ongoing construction of six new schools that will serve as anchors for revitalization and growth across the City of Huntsville.
