Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, performs laboratory testing in any of the various sections of the laboratory, performs control testing and initiates troubleshooting steps for problem areas. The following statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position. 1. Responsible for consulting with other testing personnel, testing supervisors, assistant lab manager or lab manager for assistance in resolving technical problems, decision making and areas of question. 2. Performs testing on blood, urine, and other body fluids. 3. Performs testing in any one or combination of laboratory sections following test methods defined in the procedure manual. 4. Processes Microbiology specimens and interprets test results. 5. Prepares specimens and routes them to appropriate reference labs for all testing not performed in-house. 6. Verifies test results in computer utilizing Outstanding Orders Reports and worksheets and responds appropriately to Delta and Critical (Panic) values. 7. Calculates and tabulates results and makes reports of observations. 8. Assists in keeping files and records up-to-date and orderly. 9. Consistently assures that procedure manuals are orderly and reports discrepancies in procedures. 10. Consults with appropriate personnel regarding difficult analyses or abnormal findings. 11. Performs quality control and instrument check procedures with appropriate documentation. 12. Performs routine and unscheduled preventative maintenance on instruments. 13. Participates in proficiency testing surveys. 14. Reports supplies usage and assists in maintaining an adequate stock of supplies. 15. Receives chain-of-custody specimens and collects chain-of-custody specimens on MMCS employees for cause. 16. Participates in training new employees and MLT students. 17. Performs duties in other departments, including venipuncture, checking charges, scanning, indexing, printing results, as necessary to assure maximum productivity and workflow. 18. Maintains good relations with patients, medical staff, co-workers, other departments and physician offices/homes hat use our services. 19. Verbal ability to communicate with patients and other clientele instructions and other information. Numerical ability to calculate by formula. Provides technical support to the lab by receiving/processing requisitions/specimens and performing specified lab tests according to standard operating procedures and managing those specimens referred to outside laboratories for testing. Responds to phone requests and enters lab test data into computer. Cleans laboratory equipment and glassware. Exposed to hazardous environments the course of the work day. Responsibilities * Processes patient samples according to procedure and recognizes when problems exist with specimens or orders. Reports problems in a timely manner to appropriate personnel. * Performs all tasks associated with specimens referred to other testing laboratories (reference labs) so that testing is performed and results reported in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner. * Maintains all required documentation related to referral testing. * Maintains all CLIA and COLA certificates for approved reference labs used by Red Bay Hospital. * Processes specimens prior to testing to include (but not be limited to) centrifugation when appropriate, preparing aliquots, delivering to testing departments, etc. * Assists with electronic receipt of other specimens physically delivered to the laboratory. * Performs waived testing such as Rapid Strep A, Urine HCG, RSV, FLU, UDS, COVID_19 tests. * Inoculates culture media * Assists with/performs annual thermometer calibration verification. * Washes pipettes, cleans centrifuges and refrigerators at assigned intervals. Records documentation appropriately. * Serves as courier, picking up specimens from on- and off-campus clients and delivers to lab for testing. * Accepts and completes additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: High School diploma or GED required. Experience: Previous work experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant is strongly preferred. Additional Skills/Abilities: * Completes hospital and departmental orientation. * Ability to work in a stressful fast paced environment. * Ability to remember multiple procedures and policies. * Willingness to work irregular hours with varying assignments. * Understanding of safe work practices. * Must have good communication skills. * Absolute integrity and accuracy in the identification and reporting of number and names.
