The story all began in 1979 with Bob Hurley, who formed a surfboard company while in Costa Mesa – a city in California where surfing was popular with many of the locals.
Well into the early 1980's, Hurley Surfboards was excelling as a company and Bob was shaping surfboards for many of the best surfers in the world.
They linked up with an up and coming brand, Billabong and created Billabong USA . By the mid 1980’s, Hurley had full control over design, sourcing, marketing and financing of Billabong USA.
In 1982, Bob and his business manager, Joe K., began pursuing a hot Australian clothing brand, Billabong.
Hurley Surfboards was excelling as a company, and in 1983 they started an Australian clothing brand called Billabong.
In the mid 1990’s the Billabong USA team noticed a swing in consumer preference and found that the modern surfer was also into, skate fashion, music and art.
In 1998, the United States licensing rights for Billabong were up for renewal after the company had grown to over $70 million in sales in America.
Since the company was at the end of a license agreement and at a new concept for the future, Bob and his team decided to launch their own company Hurley in 1999.
The USA management team decided to not renew the USA license for Billabong USA and in 1999 Hurley International was born.
On February 22, 2002, the company was sold to Nike, Inc. for an undisclosed amount.
In October 2007, Nike announced that they had appointed a new CEO for Hurley – Roger Wyett.
In 2012, Bob Hurley stepped in as interim CEO after Egeck left the company.
Hurley stepped down as CEO in 2015 and was replaced by Bob Coombes.
In June 2019, Nike Inc. appointed John Schweitzer as CEO and CFO of the Hurley brand.
On October 29, 2019, Nike announced the sale of Hurley to Bluestar Alliance LLC for an undisclosed amount.
On the 23rd January 2020, Conquest Sports, the licensee for the Converse brand in Australia and New Zealand announced a joint venture partnership with Blue Star Alliance LLC (USA) to distribute the Hurley brand in Australia and New Zealand.
Hurley then launched its first Australian focused site (https://www.hurley.com.au/) in July 2021.
