NATE or HVAC Excellence Certification

Responsibilities
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on:
Refrigeration systems (walk-in freezers, reach-in coolers, blast chillers, HVAC units).
Other bakery equipment (deck ovens, rack ovens, mixers, proofers, boilers, pumps).
Facility systems (plumbing, drains, filters, mechanical support systems).
Read and interpret electrical and hydraulic diagrams, with a strong understanding of technical symbols and system logic.
Carry out routine tasks such as filter changes, drain cleaning, lubrication, and safety checks.
Diagnose root causes of failures and implement effective solutions independently.
Take ownership of problems: not just reporting them, but resolving them efficiently.
Work proactively: when no active work order is pending, seek out preventive tasks, improvements, or solutions.
Maintain accurate records in CMMS such as Limble and ensure full documentation of maintenance activities.
Keep shop areas organized, stocked, and compliant with safety and food safety standards such as OSHA, SQF, EPA.
Support equipment upgrades, installations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Drive between our locations in DC, MD, and VA.

Key Responsibilities:

ERG is seeking a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician with mid- to senior-level experience to assist with facilities projects for a Department of Defense (DoD) client. In this role you will perform HVAC Maintenance support such as, assisting with HVAC installations, routine maintenance, repair and troubles hooting related to mechanical, electrical, and low-voltage controls. The position is based out of a federal site in Indian Head, Maryland. The ideal candidate should be capable of scoping, estimating, and planning for minor HVAC repair projects and must be motivated with the skills to prioritize, perform, and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
This position will be full-time at the federal site in Indian Head, MD, and will include interaction and support from ERG personnel at the federal site, as well as from ERG's Fairfax and Arlington offices. Indian Head is approximately 30 miles from Washington, DC, 25 miles from Alexandria, VA, and 60 miles from Fredericksburg, VA. Job Description:
Install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and cooling units
Diagnose and repair electronic, mechanical, and electrical components of these systems
Preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair to a variety of commercial HVAC systems, chillers, boilers, water source heat pumps, cooling towers, package rooftops, split systems, controls, pumps, VAVs
Support the full life cycle of small-scale projects from initial concept design through project completion
Perform routine maintenance tasks on facilities and equipment, including HVAC, electrical, digital controls, and other mechanical systems
Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with facilities and equipment, and repair or replace defective parts as needed
Respond to emergency maintenance requests
Conduct site visits to document existing facility conditions and develop new requirements
Prepare technical memoranda/reports to document facility conditions and project status
Ensure that all facilities are in compliance with applicable codes and regulations
Maintain accurate records related to maintenance activities and administrative tasks, including work orders, preventive maintenance schedules, equipment inventory, and time sheets
Qualifications and Skills:
At least 2 years of HVAC experience and current Journeyman licensure
High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in facilities maintenance, engineering, or a related field preferred
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Reclamation and Recovery Certification
Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and blueprints
Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other mechanical systems
Be familiar with a wide range of equipment and troubleshooting techniques
Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) required
Familiarity with state and local building codes, OSHA regulations, and NFPA standards a plus
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Must currently hold or be able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret-level security clearance; Must be a U.S. citizen as this position is not eligible for Limited Access Authorizations

Position Overview: Lead Commercial HVACTechnician
As a Lead Commercial HVACTechnician, you'll play a key leadership role supporting your Regional Service Manager and team. You'll ensure operational excellence, safety, and quality service delivery across your assigned region.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct monthly audits to ensure compliance with company standards
Perform truck inspections (cleanliness, equipment, PPE)
Conduct site assessments (e.g., roof cleanliness, proper disposal of materials)
Verify quality of repairs and installations
Ensure team members have proper PPE and coordinate replenishment
Approve vendors for operational needs
Assist with technician vacation planning and on-call scheduling
Lead PM completion efforts and ensure accurate documentation
Support training coordination for technicians
Perform other duties as assigned by the Division Manager
Location: Field-based role in Washington, DC with occasional travel for training or meetings.
Qualifications Experience
5+ years of commercial HVAC and refrigeration experience
2+ years in a supervisory or lead technician role
Proven ability to manage teams, conduct audits, and ensure safety and quality compliance
Experience with preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and equipment changeouts
Familiarity with national accounts or multi-site operations (preferred)
Certifications
EPA Universal Certification (required)
Additional certifications such as NATE or HVAC Excellence are a plus
Physical Requirements
Climb ladders while carrying up to 30 lbs.
Lift up to 75 lbs. and maneuver in confined spaces
Wear required PPE
Additional Requirements
Valid driver's license
Ability to pass drug, background, and driving record checks
Meet enhanced security clearance requirements
Flexibility for overtime and occasional travel
Skills & Abilities
Proficiency in servicing, installing, and troubleshooting:
Commercial HVAC systems
Refrigeration systems and ice machines
Chillers, cooling towers, water source heat pumps
Strong customer service and communication skills
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
Familiarity with light commercial equipment
Experience with industry software (e.g., ServiceTitan, FastField, ServiceChannel - preferred but not required)

Responsibilities:
Under limited supervision, the employee assists with installation, modification, maintenance, and repair work on University HVAC systems and equipment to include:
Locates causes of failure or malfunction by observation and testing of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic components, and application-specific computer programs;
Maintains cooling towers, hot water and chilled water piping and controls, direct expansion systems, fans and blowers, starters, pneumatic and electrical controls, condensate drains, domestic and commercial refrigeration, walk-in coolers and freezers, water fountains, and ice machines;
Installs new motors, pumps, compressors, and other parts as necessary;
Cleans, repairs, replaces, and/or adjusts pneumatic, electric, and motor controls, and related safety devices;
Makes initial settings and final adjustments of refrigeration and heating, and air conditioning systems;
Modifies existing installations to obtain required results;
Repairs or replaces other functional components of HVAC equipment or systems as necessary;
Carries out designated preventive maintenance and seasonal start-up and shut-down procedures;
Analyzes HVAC systems and controls to determine problems and initiates repairs as directed by the supervisor;
Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehicle supplied with tools and materials, and keeps it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition.
Performs miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting the equipment and mechanical areas;
Picks up materials from suppliers when requested;
Inspects areas and reports problems to the supervisor;
Maintains paperwork and electronic communications, including work orders, including records time;
Orders and includes materials on work orders in an expedient manner;
Follows established university and departmental policies and procedures;
Follows established safety procedures and reports accidents and problems to supervisor promptly; and
Performs assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the HVAC trade.
Employee is designated as “Essential Personnel.” All essential personnel employees are required to report for snow removal and assist with clearing grounds, roads, pathways, sidewalks or steps.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent;
Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in the HVAC trade;
Demonstrated knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the HVAC trade;
Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
Knowledge of local, state, and national mechanical codes;
Ability to use necessary hand and power tools and testing equipment;
Ability to analyze HVAC systems and controls to determine problems and initiate repairs as directed by supervisor;
