Hyde School company history timeline

1850

In 1850, Anliff C. Hyde donated a plot of land where a small one-room school was later built.

1860

In 1860, a new four-room structure was built nearby.

1894

In 1894, a new school was built on the same ground and was known as King Hill School.

1901

In 1901, a new four-room brick school was built at 6th and Harmon.

1908

In 1908, an addition was added and King Hill students moved there.

1927

Joe was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on July 25, 1927.

1930

In 1930, land was purchased south of the old school on Thompson Street.

1947

In 1947, Joe was admitted to Bowdoin College after a short stint in the United States Navy during World War II. During his college years, he spent one summer hitchhiking across America and another as a camp counselor, where he found his love for teaching.

1950

He graduated from Bowdoin in 1950, with a degree in Economics.

1966

Hyde was founded in 1966 by Joe Gauld, who had previously worked for 13 years in public and private schools.

1968

In 1968, a ten-classroom annex with cafeteria was built on the northeast.

1971

Opened as a school for boys, Hyde went co-ed in 1971.

1974

The Family Program started at Hyde in 1974, and Hyde has been helping parents help their kids develop the character they need to succeed ever since.

1989

He founded the Hyde Foundation in 1989, whose mission is to deliver the Hyde Schools character concept to interested schools and communities nationwide.

1996

In 1996, Hyde also purchased "a 700-acre tract of western maine woodland" in Eustis, ME, that is used as its wilderness campus.

When a site became available in Woodstock, Connecticut in 1996, a second campus, known as Hyde-Woodstock, was opened on the campus of the former Annhurst College.

1998

A beautiful 600-acre wilderness campus, Lennox Lodge, in the pristine Bigelow Mountains on Flagstaff Lake in Eustis, Maine opened in 1998.

2016

By 2016, like other boarding schools, both the Bath and Woodstock campuses were facing declining enrollment.
