Hydro Resources company history timeline

1984

The Itaipu Dam, straddling Brazil and Paraguay, opened in 1984 with a capacity of 12,600 MW - it has since been enlarged and upgraded to 14,000 MW - and is today only eclipsed in size by the 22,500 MW Three Gorges Dam in China.

2009

Nicknamed the “Quiet Giant,” this Bath County, Virginia, plant holds first place as the world’s largest pumped storage plant for 20 years, and regains its position at the top of the list after a refurbishment of its six turbines in 2009.

2017

Following the acquisition of Sapa in 2017, Hydro also became a global leader in extruded products.

2018

In 2018, the company was accused of not taking seriously the environmental challenges at the large aluminium refinery in Barcarena.
