Schwartz and Tise sold their shares to the Tompkinses in 1976.
1979: Founded Esprit with partner Doug Tompkins.
The company did well until late 1987, when earnings began to drop.
Subsequent stores were established in New Orleans, San Francisco, and Aspen, Colorado, and by 1987 there were 14 Esprit retail stores nationwide.
In March 1988 the Wall Street Journal reported on the rift between the Tompkinses.
Appointing herself creative director, Susie brought back the design team with which she had worked before leaving Esprit in 1988.
Early in 1989, Susie and Doug Tompkins filed for divorce.

In early 1990 Tompkins met Bruce Katz, the founder of Rockport Shoe Co., who told her how much he regretted having sold the company he had created.
1990: Bought out ex-husband's United States interest in company.

In 1991 the recently appointed "image director," Neil Kraft, produced the "What would you do?" advertising campaign that surveyed young people about how they would like to change the world.

In 1992 she launched an adult line under the Susie Tompkins label, which was aimed to regain customers who had worn Esprit clothes 10 to 15 years earlier.
In 1993, the company made a short-lived foray back into the mail-order business with a catalog devoted to the Esprit Ecollection.
In 1994, on a whim, the company picked up the master apparel license for Doctor Seuss and produced a few t-shirts and hats to sell in Esprit boutiques during the holiday season.
The Susie Tompkins line was closed in 1995, after having been introduced not with a fashion show, but by a sermon on inner-city troubles from the pastor of Tompkins's favored Glide Memorial Methodist Church of San Francisco.
In 1996, Susie Tompkins remarried and changed her name to Susie Buell.
Then, in 1996, Jay Margolis, a former vice-chairman at both Tommy Hilfiger and Liz Claiborne, came to the helm.
In 1997, Margolis stepped up the pace of Esprit's turnaround even further.
In celebration of its 30th year anniversary in 1998, Esprit launched an on-line store.
In September 2016 the time had come: The OCxEsprit Heritage Collection is launched! The look is inspired by Esprits Californian roots – and the integrated spirit of the 80s is reminiscent of the own New Wave era.
Welcome to 2017 – and to #ImEsprit.
Together with UN Women National Committee of Germany Esprit launched the “WE ALL” campaign in celebration of International Women's Day on March 8, 2019.
