This includes applications and components in the framework of the Unified Forecast System (UFS), a community-based, coupled, comprehensive Earth modeling system spanning spatial scales from local to global, and temporal scales from hourly to seasonal forecast scales. Work location is remote or hybrid. We are recruiting highly qualified candidates to fill the Chief Earth System Modeling Scientist position with the following responsibilities and requirements: Serves as domain expert in numerical weather prediction (NWP) and Earth system modeling (ESM). Engages with stakeholders to resolve tactical issues and problems related to systems developed and maintained by the contract, serving as the bridge between scientists and engineers. Provides strategic advice and guidance on engineering challenges, including but not limited to high performance computing and software development. Captures science-based skill and capability requirements from the Government and stakeholders in the NWP community and translates into activities and initiatives that advance NWP using ESM approaches towards those requirements. Additional responsibilities: Working with the PM, Chief Software Engineer, and Chief System Architect, identify and collaborate with key stakeholders in the NWP and the ESM communities to identify future strategic directions to advance NWP in an ESM framework; working with the product manager, ensures that capabilities developed by the contract are advancing the highest priority science-based outcomes of stakeholders. REQUIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: (A subset of the following experience/background/skills): MS or PhD degree in Earth system science disciplines (including atmospheric sciences, oceanic science, geophysics, numerical modeling), computing, and other relevant fields. BS degrees in these fields with demonstrated experience will be considered. Experience with numerical modeling development for Earth's atmosphere, ocean, land surface and cryosphere. Experience with data assimilation methodology and numerical techniques. Experience developing scientific software and software infrastructure for use with Earth system models. Proficient with scientific programming languages (e.g., FORTRAN, C/C++, Python, etc.), shell scripts, etc. Knowledge and experience with the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) or similar modeling system architecture. Experience with high performance computing (HPC) environments and cloud computing for ESM. Knowledge of AI/ML methodology and techniques for ESM at global and/or regional scales. Excellent communications and presentation skills. Incumbent working experience at NOAA/EPIC highly preferred. Minimum years of relevant experience: eight. U.S. citizenship or green card is required. Provides the primary interface with the NOAA Program Lead, Contracting Officer, Contracting Specialist, and Contracting Officer's Representatives. Acts as primary contact and responsible for meeting contractual commitments including the financial, quality, technology, and schedule performance of assigned program(s) within contractual boundaries, company expectations, and established standards, using the approved business model and management tools. Establishes an executable baseline and manages the program risk and opportunity. Sets milestones and monitors adherence to program master plans and schedules. BS degrees in these fields with demonstrated experience will be considered. Experience with numerical modeling development for Earth's atmosphere, ocean, land surface and cryosphere. Experience with data assimilation methodology and numerical techniques. Experience developing scientific software and software infrastructure for use with Earth system models. Proficient with scientific programming languages (e.g., FORTRAN, C/C++, Python, etc.), shell scripts, etc. Knowledge and experience with the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) or similar modeling system architecture. Experience with high performance computing (HPC) environments and cloud computing for ESM. Knowledge of software engineering methodologies (such as containerization, etc.) for data intensive modeling applications.
