General Manager Job Duties and Expectations
As General Manager, you're at the helm of the restaurant. You'll lead the charge in creating an awesome guest experience, running smooth operations, and building a positive work culture alongside your AGMs and Department Managers. You'll have a hand in every department - FOH, Kitchen, and Delivery/Catering - and it's your job to make sure things run in sync with our Vision, Values, and Big Five Code of Conduct. Success in this role is measured in great food quality, happy teams and customers, a clean store, and a healthy bottom line.
Our GMs are more than just great operators- they're business builders. We want you working
on
the business more than
in
it. That means stepping in during crunch times or for staff training, but your real focus is on big-picture stuff: coaching your team, keeping finances in check, and making sure systems are running smoothly. It's a full-time job that takes strong leadership, attention to detail, and a passion for people.
You'll kick things off with a deep dive into our world - about 10 weeks of hands-on learning at one of our Madison store locations, followed by 13 weeks of focused management training. Once you're ready, you'll head to your restaurant to take the reins as GM.
During your training, you'll learn how to:
Lead and train both general staff and Shift Leaders,
Conduct effective performance reviews,
Manage inventory and vendor relationships,
Place accurate product orders,
Facilitate Open Book Finance practices with your team,
Communicate staffing needs and work closely with the recruitment team,
Build and maintain schedules that work for both the team and the business,
Identify opportunities to improve store performance and put new systems into action.
We're looking for someone who is ready to take ownership, lead by example, and make a real impact.
General Manager Experience Requirements
To be a successful GM at Ian's Pizza, you'll need a baseline of experience.
4+ years of Assistant General Manager or General Manager experience in quick-service restaurants or other restaurants is preferred. Will consider equivalent management experience in retail, grocery, hospitality, hotels, event venues, healthcare, construction, or the military. If you have experience managing large teams in fast-paced environments while maintaining high operational standards, we'd love to hear from you!
Experience working in and training individuals in a variety of restaurant departments (FOH and BOH, Delivery, Catering) and the ability to learn, perform, and train all general staff roles at a high level within the first 6 months of employment.
Food Manager (ServSafe or Learn2Serve) Certified OR able to complete the certification in the first 6 months of employment.
Safe Alcohol Server Training (ServSafe or Learn2Serve) Certified OR able to complete the certification in the first 6 months of employment.
General Manager Skills and Qualities
Our GMs are top-notch operations and people leaders! Here's what we are looking for...
Embrace and embody the 2030 Vision, Company Values, and the Big Five Code of Conduct (Awareness, Connection, Generosity, Dependability, Effort).
Thorough understanding of how to drive sales, enforce proper food quality, interpret P&L statements, staffing, local store marketing, and sanitation.
Keep organized, set priorities, and meet deadlines. Effectively manage the team and your time to ensure things get done whether you are at the restaurant or not.
Motivate others to always put in their best effort, and hold all staff accountable to high standards of food quality, customer service, and cleanliness.
Exercise good judgment, problem-solving, and initiative to get things done and plan ahead.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must-have! Maintain a good attitude, high levels of awareness, and direct, kind communication, especially in situations that require quick action or are sensitive.
Other Qualification Requirements
Physical:
Able to stand and walk for long periods. To bend, crouch, and lift up to 50 lbs. To use ovens, pizza cutters, and other equipment of the business. Equipment we use may be very hot, sharp, and/or large in size, and it requires great care and attention to safety standards.
Technology:
Use or able to learn to use administrative tools such as Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Sheets, Dripos POS System, etc. Previous experience using such tools is a plus.
Communication:
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to read, write, and send clear and detailed email and text messages regularly.
Language:
English language proficiency is required. Being bilingual in Spanish is a major plus!
Transportation:
Reliable transportation to and from the restaurant locations for a variety of shift times, including mornings (as early as 6am), afternoons, and nights (as late as 4am).
Age:
Must be 18+ to apply due the hours and equipment usage required.
Work Authorization:
Must be authorized to work in the United States and able to provide adequate identification documentation at Orientation and/or Day One. For more information, you can visit **************************
General Manager Schedule
General Managers are salaried for 40 hours a week. Each week, you will spend about 10 hours in operations/on-shift and about 30 hours on administration, projects, and meetings.
Many of our busiest shifts are on evenings and weekends, and we expect all managers to be available to work evenings and weekends. As a leader in the restaurant, you will work with the leadership team to be available for emergencies and help find coverage or cover shifts as needed.
The GM is the last stop for all emergency and problematic situations. The GM must be able to be contacted at all times, and when not available, must have a contingency plan in place.
