1973: Hokkaido Refinery is completed.

1975

1975: Aichi Refinery is completed.

1976

In 1976, Idemitsu Japan Sea Oil Development Co.

1979

In 1979 the Idemitsu Geothermal Development Co.

1979 Idemitsu begins supplying lubricant products in the United States.

1980

In 1980, imports of coal from Australia began and the Coal Cartridge System (CCS) was developed to supply coal for small users.

1982

1984

Ltd. started oil and gas drilling in the offshore field of Niigata Prefecture, beginning commercial production in 1984.

1985

After 1985, as a result of the “reverse oil shock,” the price of oil declined rapidly, and some of Idemitsu’s alternative energy resources development projects lost their economic effectiveness.

1986

The Chiba Bulk Terminal was built in 1986.

In 1987 Idemitsu began to develop an oil field in southeast Turkey with the Finnish company Neste Oy.

1989

In 1989 Idemitsu acquired 10 percent ownership of two concessions of the Snorre oil field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.

1990

1991

In 1991, the company opened its first stations in Portugal.

As the result of trial bowling—test drilling to estimate the total amount of deposits available—the uranium deposits at Cigar Lake were estimated at 192,500 tons, and mining operations were to begin in 1991.

1993

The company had already introduced a gasoline brand that reduced benzene content to less than 1 percent in 1993--three years before Japan even passed regulations restricting Benzene.

1998

In the spring of 1998, the company also introduced a low energy-consumption engine oil, ZEPRO Mile-Stage SJ.

1999

In 1999, Nippon Oil Co. and Mitsubishi Oil Co., Japan’s second and sixth largest oil companies, agreed to merge.

2000

Relief from that debt might ultimately take the form of a public offering, according to the May 25, 2000 Asia Times Online.

2002

In March 2002, the company acquired the rights to develop offshore oil fields in Norway’s North Sea.

2003

While no further news of an IPO surfaced, Idemitsu continued to pursue expansion opportunities. It planned to begin production in 2003.

In 2006 Apollo America changed its name to Idemitsu Lubricants America to unify the Idemitsu name around the world.

2016

July 2016 Idemitsu Research & Development Center opens in Wixom, Michigan; features state-of-the-art equipment that allows for cutting-edge product development.

August 2016 Idemitsu 0W-20 becomes first engine oil to receive dexos-1™ GM approval.

2017

August 2017 Idemitsu and ZEPRO fully synthetic motor oils begin distribution on Amazon.com in North America.

2020

May 2020 Idemitsu 0W-16 Synthetic Oil launches in the United States Entire line of Idemitsu Synthetic Oils meet latest SP/GF-6 standards.

2022
