Immaculata University company history timeline

1920

In 1920, the institution was granted a college charter, making it the first Catholic college for women in the Philadelphia area.

Grounded in IHM tradition and charism since 1920.

Immaculata was founded as Villa Maria College, a women's college in 1920.

1929

The name was changed to Immaculata College in 1929.

1966

1969

In 1969, Immaculata introduced an evening program of continuing education for both men and women in response to the needs of the local community.

1974

A continuing education office opened in 1974 to provide special services for this population.

1983

In 1983, the graduate program took a more defined shape with three new master’s degree tracks in psychology, nutrition education, and educational leadership and administration.

1991

In 1991, Immaculata’s Graduate Division added a master’s degree in music therapy and doctoral programs in clinical psychology and educational leadership and administration.

1994

The first doctoral program was added in 1994 for clinical psychology.

2000

In 2000, the University restructured its academic offerings into the Women’s College, the College of Graduate Studies, and the College of LifeLong Learning.

2002

Effective August 2002, the college is now known as Immaculata University.

2005

The school welcomed its first class of both men and women in 2005 and currently offers extensive athletic and social programs for both genders.

The school became coeducational in 2005 and the Women’s College was renamed the College of Undergraduate Studies.

2011

The Mighty Macs have recently become movie stars with production of the 2011 feature film The Mighty Macs, which tells the story of the famous team.

2014

The championship teams were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2014.

2017

Barbara Lettiere assumed the office as the tenth president of Immaculata University on July 1, 2017, and is the first lay president of Immaculata.
