1948

In-N-Out focuses on providing a basic menu with few changes since the restaurant was established in 1948.

22, 1948, according to the company history, which calls it the state’s first drive-thru burger stand.

1954

While McDonald's, which began the same year as In-N-Out, decided to franchise in 1954, the Snyders, though inundated with franchise inquiries, remained firm.

1963

Palm trees are a frequent motif—printed on the company’s plates, painted onto restaurant walls—a nod both to In-N-Out’s California roots and to Grandpa Snyder’s favorite movie, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, from 1963.

1965

The longtime association of In-N-Out with drag racing and classic cars builds on Harry's initial 1965 investment in the development of Irwindale Drag Strip.

1974

In-N-Out fires up the grills on New Year's Eve of 1974 at its first Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.

1976

Harry Snyder oversaw In-N-Out Burger until 1976, when he passed away from cancer.

At the time of Harry's death in 1976 the company had expanded to only 18 stores located exclusively in California.

In-N-Out grew gradually, reaching 18 locations, all in California, by the time Harry died in 1976.

1979

A new In-N-Out in Ontario, California, became the chain’s first to offer inside dining in 1979, according to the company history.

1983

Rich Snyder also established the In-N-Out University in 1983.

1986

In-N-Out Burger became active in donating funds to the prevention of child abuse in 1986.

1989

In the July 24, 1989, issue of Forbes, Rich Snyder stated, "It's hard enough to sell burgers, fries and drinks right.

Until 1989 In-N-Out Burger purchased most of their property.

1990

By the time Rich Snyder readied In-N-Out Burger to venture out of the Los Angeles area and into San Diego County in 1990, he had brought the number of locations up to 55.

1992

The first In-N-Out restaurant outside California opened in 1992 in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the company history.

1993

On December 14, 1993, just months away from moving the corporate headquarters to Irvine, Rich Snyder was killed in a commuter plane crash.

Unfortunately, Richard wouldn’t live long enough to see his company develop and flourish further — he perished on a plane crash in 1993, aged 41.

1997

In-N-Out Burger was the winner, for example, in the quick-service burger division in the 1997 Restaurants & Institutions annual poll.

1999

Guy Snyder, died of a drug overdose in 1999, whereupon Esther Snyder assumed control.

In 1999, after Sergeant Andrew Ramirez, who had been a POW for a month in Serbia, was released, his first request was for a Double-Double (his mother got one to him).

2004

Additional Nevada restaurants in Reno, Sparks, and Carson City were opened in the fall of 2004.

2005

After accepting only cash in its many years in business, In-N-Out began accepting Visa and MasterCard for payment on September 15, 2005, beginning at the University of California, Irvine location.

2006

Esther Snyder, the matriarch of the founding family, subsequently held the presidency until she died August 4, 2006, aged 86.

2010

Lynsi Torres, the only grand daughter of the founders, assumed the presidency in 2010, and owns the entire company, though partially held in trust until she turns 35.

After taking over in 2010, she embarked on a slow, steady expansion across the West, opening more than 80 stores in the same period that Five Guys, a close competitor, added more than 500 across America.

2011

She moved the company into Texas for the first time in 2011 and into Oregon four years later.

2013

2014

She shared in a 2014 Best in Business award in government reporting by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers for a Financial Times A1 investigation detailing the United States government’s then-running price tag for its conflict in Afghanistan.

The chain’s appeal is not limited to the United States: In 2014, In-N-Out opened a temporary location in Taipei; the burgers sold out in two hours.

2016

The Slave 2 Nothing Foundation was established in 2016 to help improve the lives of individuals and families affected by substance abuse and/or human trafficking.

2017

In-N-Out is conservatively worth $3 billion, and Snyder now owns virtually all of it after receiving chunks on her 25th, 30th and 35th birthdays (she got the last slice in 2017).

2018
