In 1979 O'Reilly was the first nonfamily member to become CEO of the American food giant, a position he held for 20 years.
Sales reached IR£43.6 million in 1980, producing a pretax profit of IR£3 million.
O'Reilly had appointed him head of Independent's international division in 1981, where he oversaw the acquisition of APN (Australian Provincial Newspapers).
The Independent was founded on 7th October 1986 and is the UK’s youngest national daily newspaper.
The Independent colour magazine was first provided with the newspaper on Saturday 10th September 1988, together with the new Weekend review newspaper section.

Independent expanded its holdings into South Africa and Portugal in 1994.
1994: Independent acquires control of the Argus Group--South Africa's largest publishing group.
In 1994, the Mirror Group of Newspapers bought a majority of shares of the Independent and restructured the company.
In March 1995, the company was restructured with Independent News & Media owning 43% of the shares and Mirror Group Newspapers a further 43% of the shareholding.

A 28 percent stake in New Zealand's largest newspaper, Wilson & Horton, was acquired in 1995.
Following year, (1995), the Independent News & Media, Prisa; and MGN divided the company shares among themselves.
Independent gradually built up its holdings in W&H, achieving full control in 1996.
He sold the Delaware State News to his four children (including Joe, who was then the 26-year-old managing editor). Jack Smyth passed away in 1996 at the age of 80.
1997: Independent acquires control of Wilson & Horton--New Zealand's largest publishing group.
Further refinancing followed and on 11th March 1998, Tony O’Reilly purchased a further 54% of the shares to obtain ownership of the newspaper.
Within a couple of years it had built up its holding to 47 percent, and in 1998 bought out the shares of the Mirror Group, Spanish publisher Prisa, and five dozen other shareholders.
1998: Full control of London's the Independent is acquired.
The name Independent News & Media PLC (INM) was adopted in 1999 to reflect the group's expanding focus.
2000: Anthony O'Reilly is appointed executive chairman; INM acquires Belfast Telegraph, Northern Ireland's largest publisher.

2001: INM restructures New Zealand operations into APN News & Media, creating a major Australasian media conglomerate (APN is owned 40.7 percent by INM).
In 2002, Ivan Fallon from The Sunday Times took the helm of the Independent News & Media, but the decline of its sales did not reverse.

On 30th September 2003, The Independent started a revolution in the newspaper industry when it introduced a compact (tabloid) edition of the paper- printed in addition to the broadsheet edition of the paper, providing readers with a choice of format.
The last broadsheet edition of The Independent was printed on 14th May 2004 and the newspaper is now printed in compact format only.
The Independent launched “Extra”, a second features section (Monday-Friday) on 25th April 2006.
Founded as a nonprofit organization in 2007, Independent Media Publications inherited the rights to the AIVF’s publications, including the 30-year archives of The Independent Film & Video Monthly and several books.
The newspaper was re-launched in 2007 and in common with a number of Sunday newspapers, it developed a number of regular supplements.
On 23rd September 2008 the main newspaper became full colour and the Extra supplement was renamed “Independent Life Supplement”. There is also a separate Sports section on a Monday and an Arts & Books section on a Friday.
Despite the growth, the company further reduced its staff and in 2008, moved to Northcliffe House, Kensington High St where the Associated Newspapers’ headquarters lie.
For the first time in its 18 year history, the newspaper switched to full colour production in 2008.
Alexander Lebedev from Russia purchased the newspaper in March 2010.
In 2020 the publication found a new home at Emerson College.
