Indian Creek School company history timeline

1973

Indian Creek School was founded in September 1973 by educators Anne Coleman Chambers and Rebecca Randolph.

1973 Indian Creek School opens its doors to 33 students in four Nursery, Kindergarten, and first Grade classes.

1979

1979 The first eighth grade class graduates from Indian Creek School.

Indian Creek's first eighth-grade class graduated in 1979.

1985

1985 Recognizing the need for additional elementary school space, the library wing of the Evergreen Campus building is opened.

1993

1993 Indian Creek celebrates its 20th birthday.

In 1993, a board of trustees was established and received ownership of the school to facilitate future institutional growth.

1995

1995 – A new media center is built and extensive renovations were completed

1998

1998 The final expansion of the Evergreen Campus building is completed; the square footage of the space is doubled as Alumni Hall, locker rooms, and fourteen classrooms are added on.

2004

In August 2004, Indian Creek opened an upper school for students in grades nine through twelve.

2004 Indian Creek School elects to bring its philosophy and curriculum to the Upper School level, and begins the “Taking Flight” campaign to start the work.

With a staff of over 100, Indian Creek School was by 2004 one of the largest employers in Crownsville.

2006

2006 A 96,000 square foot Upper School opens on a 114 acre campus just a few miles from the original Evergreen Campus.

2007

Lower School Head and Indian Creek co-founder Rebbecca Randolph retired in 2007.

2008

2008 Indian Creek’s first Upper School class graduates 31 students.

2009

Eileen Mattingly served as the first Upper School Head until 2009.

2010

In 2010, founder Anne Coleman Chambers stepped down as headmistress, after more than 37 years in that role.

2011

She taught psychology and human development at the Indian Creek Upper School for one year before retiring in 2011.

In 2011, Rick Branson, former headmaster of Hokkaido International School in Sapporo, Japan, became head of school.

2013

2013 Indian Creek celebrates its 40th birthday.

2017

In 2017, Indian Creek moved its seventh and eighth grade students from the original Evergreen campus to the new Upper School campus.

2019

2019 Indian Creek's Evergreen Campus is sold to Rockbridge Academy, as a major step towards unifying the Lower and Upper Schools on one campus.

In 2019, Booth Kyle, former Associate Head of Lakeside School, replaced Rick Branson as Head of Indian Creek School.

2021

2021 Indian Creek's "dream" of bringing all students, from Pre-K through grade 12, together on the School's 114-acre campus on Anne Chambers Way in Crownsville, culminated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony after years of working towards this strategic goal.
